My awakening Print Email

I am an ordinary Singaporean student who, until now, has been brainwashed like many of you. Now I know the ugly truth. I'd like to share my experience with you about my struggle in taking off the blindfold the PAP has tied on me for years.

I believe it is about the same for most young Singaporeans as it was for me. The brainwashing starts at the secondary school level when most students still do not have the maturity to be able to accurately judge if what they read is true or false. Most of them would not even be interested in politics at that age.

Like some of you, I also viewed Social Studies and National Education as propaganda of the government. But for the sake of getting good grades, many just memorise the PAP’s version of Singapore’s past and regurgitate it when needed.

Drilled into our minds from young that the PAP are the good guys and all who oppose it must be bad, more and more Singaporeans come to accept this twisted view without question.

The awakening for me came when I took up a political science module at the National University of Singapore where I'm now studying. It was about politics and governance of Singapore. That got me thinking about Singapore’s history and the role the PAP, civil service, and trade unions played in it. I also started to examine the subject of the PAP’s political hegemony.

When I signed up for the module, the first thing that I wanted to do was to find out the truth. I thought that in university, there would be more freedom to scrutinize criticize the Government and its policies. But, this turned out not to be the case at all.

The lecture notes given to students spoke highly of the PAP, and denounced the opposition. The lecturer himself, Dr Bilveer Singh,  did not take an unbiased view. Whenever he mentioned the opposition, it was to criticize them and to emphasize that they were puny compared to the PAP.

I remember Dr Singh saying that Dr Chee Soon Juan is a symbol of blundering. I was thinking, “Okay, so where’s your evidence?” But he didn’t even bother to support his point and took whatever he as if it was factually true.

And most of the students just accepted it without questioning the accuracy of his statement.

In his textbook (which was a compulsory text for all of us), the lecturer wrote that Dr Chee had ousted Mr Chiam from the SDP. This was, of course not the truth, as those of you who have read Dr Chee’s detailed account of what actually happened would know.

But as this article is about how I discovered the truth about Singapore’s history and politics, I will not digress any further.

What jolted me to the truth was Dr Chee’s books, A Nation Cheated and The Power of Courage. What I read shocked me. I read and re-read it again and again to make sure I had read everything correctly.

The shocking truth has been scrupulously kept away from the eyes of Singaporeans.  I am sure the majority of Singaporeans are blissfully unaware that Mr Lee Kuan Yew was not the hero who fought for Singapore’s independence. Rather the true hero was Mr Lim Chin Siong, who failed to become Singapore's first prime minister only because he was continuously thwarted by Mr Lee Kuan Yew and the British.

The book documented from declassified papers that “it was Lim Chin Siong who insisted that Singaporeans’ freedom and independence were not for compromise.” And that was also why the British considered him such a threat to their colonial rule, and tried all ways to cripple him. Please refer to A Nation Cheated for more details.

Everyone knows that there were riots in Singapore’s history, and these riots were explained by the Government that the Malayan Communist Party “in charge of Lim Chin Siong” was behind the whole affair and that it was (Chief Minister) Mr Lim Yew Hock who purged Singapore of the troublemaking communists.

But I learnt from this book that “it was then Chief Minister Lim Yew Hock who had purposely provoked the riots to enable the detention of Mr Lim Chin Siong.” The colonial government and Mr Lee Kuan Yew (London’s “best ally”) had no qualms employing the tactic of provoking a riot and then using the outcome to “achieve a desired political result”.

Another shocking fact that A Nation Cheated reveals is that “Lee had confidentially said that he values the [Internal Security] Council as a potential scape-goat for unpopular measures he will wish to take against subversive activities."

Another controversial issue was the clause the British introduced that would bar ex-detainees, or subversives, from standing for elections. It is revealed that “Lee Kuan Yew was secretly a party with Lim Yew Hock in urging the Colonial Secretary to impose the ‘subversives ban’.”

Yet, in Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s memoirs, he wrote “I objected to [the introduction of the clause] saying that ‘the condition is disturbing both because it is a departure from democratic practice and because there is no guarantee that the government in power will not use this procedure to prevent not only the communist but also democratic opponents of their policy from standing for elections.”

Mr Lee pretended to be the good man by pushing all the blame to the British. It was written that “Lee told Britain’s Seceretary of State, 'I will have to denounce [the clause]. You will have to take responsibility.'”

After I first read the book, I was thinking “no, no way, this can’t be the truth, everyone knows that Lee Kuan Yew was the founding father of Singapore.”

But after I reread the book repeatedly, I finally accepted the concrete evidence. And after the initial denial came the horrid shock. We have been emulating and glorifying this person all this while.

I told my mom what I had read from the book. She got very angry with me and scolded me harshly. She said that I should not get involved in politics, and implied that I (and everyone who wants to stay safe) should just turn a blind eye to the truth.

I was thinking, “This is injustice!” My mom got angry with me that day. I was afraid that she might throw away my copies of Dr Chee’s books.

Now that I know the truth, I feel burdened. I cannot continue to propagate the stand that Lee and the PAP are righteous without lying to myself. I was also scared because what I wanted to tell others was akin to blasphemy, heresy.

I thought of people like Dr Chee who know far more about this subject than I do would feel much more aggrieved because not only do most people not believe us and may even say we are subversive and spreading lies about the Government, but the authorities will also do everything to hide the truth and fool the people.

Even now, I still need to mince my words whenever I discuss politics and Lee Kuan Yew in my family. Youths are forced to self-censor and cannot say much in public because we do not have any freedom of speech (unless it’s about singing the Government’s praises).

What has become of our so-called "democratic" country? I urge all of you, for the sake of your own honor and integrity, to please read and find out for yourselves the truth.

As a fellow Singaporean, I would like to express my gratitude to you, Natalie, for expressing what you've found out and be let known on this website. I hope that this will spread. I am also happy coz this means minus one vote for the tyrants.

Let us do our part 'discreetly' (for those who are still feeling the fear to be against PAP), helping our fellow citizens become aware of what is happening here in Singapore. It is such a pity that many are still in the dark. They need to know. They have the right to know. Let's tell ;)

Many also wishes to 'spoil' their votes (found out from some people lately) - seems like void/spoil votes equals to auto win for PAP and I truly wishes that this will not happen this coming election :(

Dr Chee Soon Juan is a very capable politician and he is definitely one of LKY's & son's biggest threat. I believe Dr Chee has a potential of becoming our PM and will stay close at heart with Singaporean because of his concern and not because of wanting power but too bad, look at how the propaganda in our history textbook is teaching our children... That was how his name is being smeared every now and then.

Please vote wisely this coming election. Do not vote for PAP. Do not spoil your vote too.

This is a beautiful piece that accurately depicts the situation of social and self censorship for the young in Singapore.

The lecturer Bilveer chooses to distance himself from Dr Chee whom he perceives as someone who "blunders", but fail to take into account how political space (and together freedom of expression and political freedom) has been taken away from the oppostion camps over the years. Heck, even WP's cycling carnival at East Coast was rejected by the police!

What Chee Soon Juan has done over the last 15 years as a politician and activist was simply to reclaim back what was rightfully the citizens.! Political freedom and freedom of expression creates a more open society! The media routinely censors people who are not in agreement with the state.

It is foolish to classify those who go against the grain as nonconstructive or trying to play troublemaker. Do you see anyone else doing what Chee has done? No because nobody has the courage to make as much sacrifices as Chee.

Chee Soon Juan is a true blue patriotic Singaporean and there will come a time when he can stand high amongst Singaporeans as someone who has sacrificed so much for the greater good of the people.

The Singapore Democratic Party has come a long way since the days of Chiam helming the party. 30 years on, the party is still doing strong despite the million dollars lawsuits, police charges and the different court cases.

The brainwashing that young S'poreans go through , even as this age and time in the 21st century, simply goes to show how much disrespect and distrust the PAP has for citizens. Censorship for students is a tactic used by Chinese emperors and authoritarian states like China, North Korea and Burma.

Unfortunately for our government, they have singlehandedly put Singapore onto the world map, yes no doubt economically successful n this part of the world, but it has made Singaporeans all the less better off in psychologically.

Singaporeans have eyes to see in this Internet Age! How long does the PAP want to cover up the tracks that it has made without enraging further the population and shifting support from the populace?

I have the feeling that PAP's time is near and young people will be the ones leading the change because unlike the older generation, the youths are resistance to political intimidation that the ruling party has used to effectively in its previous election campaigns.

Thank you, Natalie for confirming what I was previously told: the Political science department at NUS teaches political folklore and not political science.

Re: "The lecture notes given to students spoke highly of the PAP, and denounced the opposition. The lecturer himself, Dr Bilveer Singh, did not take an unbiased view. Whenever he mentioned the opposition, it was to criticize them and to emphasize that they were puny compared to the PAP."

“no, no way, this can’t be the truth, everyone knows that Lee Kuan Yew was the founding father of Singapore.”

No, no, no. Lee Kuan Yew (May His Pacemaker Malfunction) is the Founding Father of Fascism in Singapore.

Any thug with a police force and army to protect him can achieve such an underwhelming goal.

    And any thug did!
  • Photokalia - Where is the evidence
Good that you questioned the evidence for what Dr Singh was teaching. We need more citizens who are capable of critical thinking and interested in Singapore's future. But what evidence do you have that Dr Chee's books are the truth? You sound as if you have just shifted from one brainwash to another. Have you ever bothered to follow up on the sources that Dr Chee cites in his books for the claims he is making? I'm sure you realise from your political science module that just because you read something in a book or read it online doesn't make it true.
  • Tan Tai Wei
This version of history Chee has been publicly explaining for several years already, indeed he started to tell it to Lee to his face in court, when judge and Davinder Singh frantically stopped him (they seemed to have prior knowledge of it already: Davinder said, to the effect that "whatever little that has been divulged known of it....")

Since then, Lee has maintained silence, and ST has, as far as I know, not found it important to mention it despite much reporting of the proceedings.

Strange; on Lee's own defence of his and government's past suings, not suing and silence would mean consent?

Kudos to Natalie Koh for the ability to self-censor the truth. At your age where many youth are blinded by the indocrination of the false lies. You are well enlightened.

This lecturer Bilveer Singh, has little moral courage to teach the truth. Then again, if he did he will be out of job. That was what happenned to Dr Chee under S. Vasoo in NUS.

I would suggest that this two books, A Nation Cheated and The Power of Courage be given to every UNiversity students or sell at a nominal price to cover cost, to let known the lies and propaganda of LKY.

MSM plays a great part to elevate his status to demi-god and hero of the people. He is actually no more than that if the truth is divulged on his political assasination of his opponents. He scooped to the lowest to demean himself.

Truth will prevail where lies once hold the day.
LKY will not last forever. His passing will be a great political deliverance of a better life for the citizens of S'pore. He may not rest in peace.

The good and bad of KARMA.

  • Seelan Palay - The evidence is in the citation
Dear Photokalia, I have over the years been following up on the sources Dr Chee's cites in his books, and doing personal research and analysis of other sources.

So perhaps you can pick out citations from his books and point them out to us. Just because you claim it might not be the truth doesn't mean it can't be verified. Thank you.
  • Jaslyn  -  Well done Nat.
Nat will make any parents proud..

in SG, many of us are condition to listen and not question what was told to us. She seeks to find out the truth through researching and questioning.

I will be very proud if she is my daughter.... See More

    Well done Nat.

    (1) I do not see what's the fuss? History is made and remade by people in power. There is no "real" history - history is a recount of past events told through the eyes of individuals. And whose piece of account makes it to history is an issue of power-relations. Natalie must not be a very good political science student or bright individual to only know this when she goes to university.

    (2) Through Natalie account, the only context she uses is Dr Chee's account of history. Erm... how UNBIAS is that anyway. If SDP becomes the government, I'm sure the history textbook will be edited. But how would we ascertain that that will be true history.

Historical account are subjective. People see the wold with colored lenses, that's the fact. We are all humans. Hence in Singapore, we have official history and a good collection of oral history from individuals who has been there and done that. Have a wide perspective, just as you take PAP's history with a pinch of salt, I'm not sure just how accurate or fair is the historical account of people who have an axe to grind with the PAP either.

    Grow up people.

"Like some of you, I also viewed Social Studies and National Education as propaganda of the government. But for the sake of getting good grades, many just memorise the PAP’s version of Singapore’s past and regurgitate it when needed."

Not true. Actually many of the values taught in social studies are GOOD values, which was strongly adhered to during the first 20 years of national building. Terms such as meritocracy, good governance and community involvement are the RIGHT values to have.

However, after Singapore's success, these are now sorely lacking. Just look at casinos, wet markets taken over, mas selamat escape, depression of native's wages, forcing many to be homeless. (not that they are lazy) And does the MIW give a hoot? All they care about is profit, profit and profit at Singaporean's expense.

What you learnt in SS was relevent in the national building stage. Now they simply stopped practicing what they preached.

A good government must bring back those values to be credible.
  • Jufrie - The truth will eventually surface
    Photokalia & tencents,

If you care to read 'A Nation Cheated' you will realise that the sources cited by Dr. Che are rock solid. They are the declassified documents of the British Government. Another indication of their accuracy: LKY and the PAP have not sued Dr Chee for telling "lies". Get it?

Surely Davinder would not want to waste another opportunity to earn more big bucks.

And no matter who writes history, there is only one truth. It will surface sooner or later, I'm preety sure.

I am also very sure that Natalie is telling the truth. Bilver has remained silent when Dr. Chee tried to contact him. What does this tell you about the singh? Only those who are not telling the truth won't dare stand up to scrutiny. His silence shows his guilt.

I hope Natalie's courage and lead will snowball into an avalanche. Like my good friend Jaslyn, I would be equally proud if I had a daughter like you Nat.

  • Photokalia
Contrary to the replies to my earlier post, I have in fact read Dr Chee's first book more than 10 years ago when I was still in the university. I also attended a few debates/dialogues organised by the Political Science society at the time, including one featuring Dr Chee and JBJ. Before that, I had been following his activities with some interest, e.g. the interviews he gave to BBC and other international news agencies, witnessing him selling copies of his book and the SDP magazines outside Orchard MRT station on weekends, etc.

Why? Because like Natalie, I grew up learning one version of history, one version of the Singapore Story, and I was intrigued that here was a man who seemed to have a different version, and he claimed that the truth should not be silenced.

So I did my own background research, i.e. reading his book (the one and only at the time), listening to him speak in person and answer questions in an open debate, and watching him on the streets in action. My conclusion is that some of the things he stands for are noble (free speech, open elections), and some of what he says is valid. This is the hallmark of what I am looking for and will respect in a credible opposition, because whatever the successes brought about by the ruling party all these years, they are far from perfect, and there should always be a place for a credible opposition in our society to guard against complacency and hubris from the powers that be.

That being said, I feel that whatever good that Dr Chee stands for is overshadowed by his unfortunate penchant for hyperbole and spectacle, to the point where I cannot respect him enough to see him as the credible opposition that we have been waiting for.

It was over 10 years ago, and I don't have the book anymore, so forgive me for not being specific with the issues I am raising with his first book (in fact I can't even remember the title anymore). But I did look up the references he stated for his facts, figures and claims. And yes, as many of you claim, they come from valid sources. However, he took many of the facts, figures and quotes out of context, and then made a mountain out of a molehill out of them. This is forgiveable if you are uneducated. However, for someone with a PHD, this is intellectual dishonesty, and not something I can put up with, especially since this man has aspirations to lead Singapore.

To give the man a chance, I attended the dialogue session where he was featured with JBJ. Again, he made a spectacle of the whole affair, coming late, and then refusing to speak until his supporters were allowed into the auditorium with him, despite being told in advance before coming that they would have to wait outside. Some might see this act as evidence of a man of principle standing his ground. But I disagree because a man of principle would have disagreed with the terms and declined to attend in the first place, instead of making an appearance in a packed auditorium and choosing to make a scene in front of everyone.

And this has been his style all the while. Making a spectacle in public and international media to show how he is being martyred and oppressed, appealing to the emotions with rhetoric sprinkled with half-truths. This kind of behaviour may win the hearts and minds of the mindless masses, but it does not impress me. I will throw my weight behind a dignified opposition that can stand up in Parliament and use reason, logic, and well-argued facts to support their position. There are a few individuals in the current batch of opposition who do that, but sadly Dr Chee is not among them.

So back to the present. Maybe his current book does state facts. Maybe there are things in it that the ruling party would prefer to leave buried and forgotten. The point is that after the experiences I have had, I think the smarter thing to do is to place my hopes in the other opposition players, rather than pay to read his latest book of "evidence" of the grey/black past of a certain group of people. If you have a strong, credible plan, and your cause is just and something that the people really want, they will rally around you, and there is no need to write books to air dirty laundry about your opponents to gain support. In fact, people will support you regardless of how the election lines are drawn. Totalitarian regimes realise this, and will try to avoid elections altogether.

Yes, Singapore will always need a strong opposition to ensure the ruling party (whoever they turn out to be 10, 20 years from now) keeps the peoples' interests at heart. Yes, there are problems in our society, e.g. people living in tents, beggars on the street, high ERP prices, traffic congestion, unhappiness over housing prices, penniless but cannot withdraw CPF, etc. And yes, there is a need for changes in the way things are done.

But if people just stepped off the soapbox for a minute and looked around, we are not being oppressed. What we have here is no where near the situation in China, Iran, Myanmar or North Korea, despite what the international press says. In fact, I see that Dr Chee is often likened to Singapore's version of Aung San Suu Kyi, and he has no objections to this comparison. Is that being honest? So where is his house arrest? Where are the secret police following him 24/7, interrogating him for days for no good reason. Did anyone block the SDP website and torture and beat his supporters? This is what he wants to believe is happening, and he tries his best to get the authorities to imprison him, arrest him in full view of the public, poison him, torture him, etc so that he can then lie on his back and cry "See that? I told you so!"

Most of us hide behind our online identities and bitch about the government and ruling party, and nothing happens to us. You think this would be condoned in China? The bloggers there have to hide their blogs and do all sorts of technical trickery to be heard by the outside world and their supporters, and these people do this at the risk of being put to death.

So first and foremost as a Singaporean, he ought to put the facts straight. What is wrong with a moderate response? What I want is someone with the intellectual honesty to say to the BBC, CNN, etc "Yes, Singapore has it's issues, and I am fighting to change that. Yes, Singapore has done well under the existing ruling party, but change is not happening fast enough, and with my leadership, the change will come about, and we will bring Singapore to the next level. But we are far from being North Korea, and I am offended by the comparison".

The next political leader who can say this, and can come up with a credible plan (not just sweeping assertions just to win popularity, e.g. dismantle CPF, stop bringing in foreign talent, etc) to convince me that the government of Singapore will be in good, responsible and honest hands, will get my vote.

My advice to him and all of the ruling party bashers is to be forward looking. No point complaining about the current situation. If you don't like it, stop complaining and start thinking of how you would like the country to be run (in specifics please!), e.g. how to handle the income disparity, housing problem, how to handle foreigners, car ownership, etc. No point wanting to dismantle an existing institution if you don't have something better as a replacement. For now I won't change my vote, but it is not fear of the ruling party hunting me down for not being a supporter. It is the fear that the next party in power doesn't know what it is doing and will send us into a bigger mess. And can you blame me for having this fear? The man who has aspirations to lead Singapore doesn't even have the cow sense to hire other people to do the non-value added work of selling books and magazines outside MRT stations. Even if you come from the (incorrect) standpoint that the average Singaporean is politically apathetic and you need to drive them out of their political slumber by distributing your literature, there is no need to do it yourself. I'm sure there are many good speakers within the SDP who can go out and spread the message. Surely his mighty intellect could be better spent planning how to run the country once he has taken over?

If he wants to win an election, it would be better if he blogged more about his specific plans or ideas on how this country could be better run, instead of throwing stones at the current situation. It worked for Obama, and with our highly educated population, I don't see why it wouldn't work for a credible opposition.

So there, my opinion, and my reasons. My bottomline is that I love Singapore, and I want it's future and my children's future to be in good and safe hands. I am fine with whoever is in power as long as they can do a good and honest job. I know there will be those who will not agree with me or attack what I have said, but I have said my piece. I will leave it at that, and we can agree to disagree.

Photokalia: Don't those opposition in parliament you have "respected" look more like civil servants receiving a monthly pay of $15,000 reporting to work? Have they solved any of the so called problems you have mentioned? Why don't you stick to your original claim of Dr Chee books and elaborate more on that?

Re: "But if people just stepped off the soapbox for a minute and looked around, we are not being oppressed."

How is it possible that the entire population of Singapore has internalized oppression if there was no oppression?

Is it possible to have internalized homophobia if there was no homophobia? Or internalized racism without any racism?

Sockpuppet photokalia, you are being questioned by someone who is something of a specialist in this area?

Please reply, and only specifically to my first question.

Natalie, that posting by "tencents" is worth not even two cents.

From "history is subjective" in the sense that it is not mere chronology, but an account of events deemed significant to a people, he/she jumped to conclude that history does not aim at truth but is only the propaganda of the powerful.

But this significance of history presumes the truth of the events related. History aims to relate the true meanings of true past events, even if in practice people have fallen short of its goal.

You are a good political science student in caring for truth. That ls why the subject is called a SCIENCE.

By the way, "tencents" has, by his/her "subjective" view of history, already implied that LKY's version of Singapore's history is untrue.

Photokalia: If there is no oppression, how come people were arrested in Operation Spectrum and others were sued till bankrupt?

  • AhKow - Photokalia -- Fri 28 May 2010 8:42 AM
Not sure what point the chap is trying to raise in the long and directionless article. But then maybe I am a slow thinker. Can someone explain?

Is the essay meant to dispute the facts of history presented by Dr Chee?

Or is the essay meant to say that the alternative facts are true but too ugly so should not be aired?

Or history, even if the ones presented by Dr Chee, is a waste of time, who cares about the past?

Or that the history presented by Dr Chee whilst factual but because it is presented by Dr Chee, and since the chap don't like Dr Chee, it lack credability? In other words, even if it is the absolute truth but since it is presented by the Dr Chee, the truth is not credible?

    Which is which?
  • AnnA - @AhKow
I think he is using a softer psychological approach aiming for those 'mindless masses' he has been talking about to agree on his disagreement on SDP...

"The man who has aspirations to lead Singapore doesn't even have the cow sense to hire other people to do the non-value added work of selling books and magazines outside MRT stations."

Photokalia being unreasonable, using his cow sense himself to tell/suggest a bankrupt to HIRE someone??? D'uh!
  • orange - No Oppression? You must be living in a dreamworld
there are much more thn it that what goes on below the surface. The clamp down on dissenters are very real. There is seemingly no oppression to the writer Photokalia is simply because he does not see it because among his circle of normal average Singaporeans living the normal Singaporean lives of being practically detached from the political scene everyone goes about doing their own business, it may not be evident.

But Singaporeans are an oppressed lot and yes it may not compare to the violence in Burma but Singapore cannot call itself a first world country when people live in the police state of total control!
  • quantum - Cow sense worthy of applause
Bill Gates has the cow sense to pick up a copy of Microsoft Windows himself - such symbolic gesture worthy of brilliant salesmanship. Same for JBJ holding a copy of Hammer, and Dr Chee holding a Democrat.
  • seebeng
People like Photokalia are comfortable voting for the PAP while trying to give the impression that they support the opposition.

To them politics has to be conducted like business. They are ready to advise opposition leaders not to sell books or newspapers outside MRT stations. This, to them is not value-added.

It would be better for Photokalia to be reminded that Lee Kuan Yew was also seen selling party publications outside the general post office building when he was in the opposition. Politicians, especially those in the opposition have to be seen touching base with the people. Such acts cannot be quantified through business concepts such as value-added.

Furthermore, CSJ is out on the streets because in Singapore the media remains under the jackboot of the autocratic PAP. Why not free the media so that the newspapers can report alternative programmes and views of the opposition for the voters to judge for themselves whether what the PAP says is true?

If the PAP's continued rule of Singapore for more than 50 years is good for the people, it shouldn't be afraid to free the media from its clutches. Only tyrants and dictators control everything, including parliament, judiciary, housing, police, civil service, etc., etc., so that truth is kept away from the citizenry.
  • quantum - Politics of fear
The author also went on at length to using scare tactics, in an attempt to create an atmosphere of fear, rather than hope.
Fear is a very unhealthy emotion, it robs us all of happiness, rational thinking, adventure, creativity, problem solving, innovation and progress. It also causes people to tell lies and hurt one another. Economies collapse and wars, destruction are started because of fear, causing societies to go back to the dark ages.
The author should listen to Obama: "Yes we can!"

Thank goodness,I didn't go and study political science at NUS.Otherwise I would have been brainwashed. When I was in secondary school, the history that we were taught is that LKY is the father of Singapore's independence and the PAP would lead Singapore towards peace, stability and prosperity and that everything would be well from 1959 when they first came to power.

Anyway, congrats to Natalie, for you had already woken up.I also had woken up 10 years ago.And in a couple of weeks,I will be 30.

There is never one truth. Of course there is holocaust, there is WWII, but look - the Japanese read history different from the rest of the world, and I am sure people in Palestine sees Holocaust very differently from the people in Germany who started it in the first place. I have read some of the books Seelan has cited, and was intrigued by some of the so called "facts" revealed, but when I read another version of the "official textbook" I will then have to make a judgement which one I think is "facts" - the judgement comes into play, and judgement is subjective. People sees the same things different, any sociologist will tell you that. And every historian will claim that the history he / she compile is the "Real History" but every history book has differences. That's fact.

Go tell the Chinese that the Spratly is historically Malaysians / Vietnamese... they will tell you to go fly kite. The Chinese vehemently believe that Spratly is historically theirs...who is correct? Whose version of history is correct?

The fact is history is a negotiated "facts" ... and whoever in power will have more currency to state which facts to choose as official history. That's the fact of life.
  • tencents
I just want to add ... one day if SDP comes into power, I'm sure you will change history as per what you believe to be the truth. Look at how vehemently you are protecting your version of truth as recounted by a few selected pool of literature all of whom were written by people who has axe to grind with the ruling party. I can bet that when that happens there will be someone who will come forth and say your truth is bullshit. And you will proclaim that person heretic and insist your version of history is facts. The cycle continues.

I repeat, I am not saying whose facts are truth. I read them with equal interest, and would admit that I'm convinced each time I read a well written history book that is the truth. Call me frivolous, call me wavering, but that is man. The commons are easily moulded. Just as Natalie is moulded to believe a few alternative history she read is truth, there are a lot of Singaporeans out there who believe otherwise. But what you are doing is branding them as stupid and myopic. I wonder who is myopic here?
  • Tan Tai Wei
"Tencents" is also "vehemently protecting his version" of the subjectivity of history.

So, his view cannot be, and does not aim at being trus?
  • quantum - Everything is History
    Tencents:

How does the CSI does the job of identifying the criminal and have the criminal convicted in court, since the crime is done in the past and is thus part of history ?

Do you dispute that you have just blinked your eyes or typed the computer? Do you dispute your birthday? Do you dispute that your parents have mated before that? Do you dispute that your ancestors have come from overseas? All these are history.

If there are multiple truths, there must be multiple falsehoods as well, so how do you tell truths from falsehoods?

  • tencents
    Quantam:

Good questions. I will try to answer.

    (a) Criminal conviction in court are judgement calls. It is the judge's perogative based on accounts of defendant, witnesses represented by attorneys and lawyers. These may be different accounts and, at times, it depends on who put forth the arguments better isn't it. That is why attorneys are one of the most despised occupations in USA. It goes the same for jury system. Even within the panel of juries, there may be different interpretation of the truth. What gets recorded down as the truth is the system of majority rule isn't it?

    (b) Of course I do not dispute that I just blinked my eyes or my birthday or my parents have mated. But to another, the same blink can be interpreted by another as a flirtatious signal, my birthday may end up to be a fake because my parents may not have given birth to me but picked me up from the dustbin, but for lack of that information, I perceived the truth as I heard it.

    (c) Yes there are multiple truths and multiple falsehoods. How do you tell? Your own instinct shaped by elements of ideology, socio-political context and personal experiences. All these are damn subjective. So just as you condemn the official history as falsehood, others can claim the books cited by Natalie as just an alternative version one can bring to the table to negotiate history. Who is the judge and who is the juries ... whoever has the power to make hitory I guess.

    tencents:

    Is 1+1=2 true or false?

If you cannot even answer that and have to wait for the appropriate authority to provide you with an answer, then you are in real trouble. It means that you cannot even think.
  • Tan Tai Wei
"Tencents" says "there can be different interpretations of the truth".

So he agrees there is "the truth" after all.

But he would rest with "different interpretations of the truth" no matter how false they were?

But no. He continues to post and argue passionately his point. Surely, then, truth matters to him?
  • quantum - Self-contradiction
    Yes! He is contradicting himself.

If what he says is true, then truth can be interpreted as false, so we can interpret what he say as false, then there can only be one interpretation of truth.

You are good, Tan Tai Wei. It is not even one cent worth.

I never meant to convince anyone here anyway, I am just stating my views.

But interestingly, for a group that passionate defends a Party that professes that its represents the truth has members that are equally assuming and snobbish when it comes to alternative views that do not subscribe to what they believe.

Well, it seems that SDP is not any different from PAP I guess, just as Abhisit is not any different from Thaksin. In fact, Abhisit who professes to represent true democracy has used the most ruthless and inhumane manner to cleanse dissent with only a twitter from most fellow CALD or LI members. He says violence are triggered by terrorists --- geez the rationale PAP always use. How ironic and distasteful. So who is sprouting the truth?

Conversely, my views may be as myopic and one cent to you as per what this Party's view is to the majority of Singaporeans, isn't it?

Being a minnow here, I rest my case. Cheers.

Everyone with COMMON SENSE will know what PAP has been doing eventually. Only those in denial, afraid of or ashamed in admitting that they have been conned by a tyrant - LKY for 44 years and will not accept the facts that this government is currently form in Nepotism and they have been living under an iron fist. They are more willing to continue to be robots and will not stand up even if anything happen to their own family although they know too well that the govt. is abusing its power towards the nation.

    **********

Being uneducated and a not well informed person, I've only noticed bit by bit, what the govt. has been doing to us since 1991 and the greatest show of a tyranny was when Singapore citizens were blamed as being complacent for MSK's escapade instead of WKS!!! You guys still haven't wake up and have the cheek to back up the people who are slamming your backside??!! And it is not going to be your backside today but will also be your children's backside tomorrow!! Bear in mind, NO ONE WILL BE LEFT OUT if you don't stop voting for PAP!!! WTF? Still sleeping?

This website deserves better articles than one that starts with a contradiction. Anything that begins with a contradiction will end up in pure garbage.
If you can deny things like holocaust and Japanese aggressions, you can deny anything.
If you cannot think and reason for yourself whether '1+1=2' is true or false and have to listen to a higher "power" then you are totally hopeless in judging other higher things such as ethics and humanity.
This is a highly negative example of an anti-intellect and a failure of the education system. A society full of such people will never produce a Galileo or a Einstein.

Tencents's comment on CSI: "What gets recorded down as the truth is the system of majority rule isn't it?"...

reminds me of the show "Law abiding citizen". In the show, Gerard Butler watches as his family got raped and killed by a robber to his house. His attorney told him this: "It's not what you know (the truth). It's what you can prove in court."

If you are the victim of such an incident, does the TRUTH matters? if, due to lack of tangible evidents and witnesses, the person u saw right in front of ur eyes butchering ur family members got to go scot free because majority of the jury believes the "other truth", would u still say "truth is subjective?"

sure, many people can have many versions of the truth, i give you that. but there can only be 1 truth. Question is, are u interested to want to find out about it? or are u indifference on what is really true or not. frankly, if i hear my neighbor's kids arguing about who stole a cookie, everyone has their own version of "truth", i couldn't be bothered... because, to me, it is not such a big deal.

but, is a big deal to know, who really knocked down an old lady on the road, what really caused a tsunami that killed thousands, who is really responsible for tainted milk that killed so many infants, and the real history of a country i called home.
