Singapore Democrats

If they were any lingering doubts that the media were the propaganda-wing of the PAP, the news "reports" of the assessment of damages hearing removed them.

Through selective reporting, accompanied by "politically correct" photographs and sketches it was clear that there was one and only one objective - to make the Lees appear hero-like.

It must be gratifying - and comforting, or course - for our leaders to know that what the say and do will be washed, bleached and perfumed for public consumption.

Unwitting Singaporeans get this glorified image punched into their mindsets and are lulled into a dangerous state of political torpor. Our leaders develop a weakness of the mind.

This is where the danger lies.

But for all his cleverness, Mr Lee Kuan Yew cannot see this danger (assuming that that is what concerns him in the first place).

But that's another discussion for another day.

For now, it is important to note how the coverage has completely ignored reality. With headlines like "Typical Chee – he changes story when caught out" and "SDP chief's version 'at odds with the facts'" the intent was obvious - portray the Lees as statesmen and Dr Chee as the villain.

Little or no coverage was given to the many exchanges between Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Dr Chee. This would be political blasphemy. How can the MM be confronted with questions that assailed his integrity? And worse, made to answer to the opposition?

Dr Chee: He (Mr Lee Kuan Yew) is talking about his integrity. Is this the same integrity that you are referring to when your government in 1963 arrested all your political opponents under Operation Coldstore?

Mr Davinder Singh, counsel for the plaintiffs, rises to object.

Dr Chee (turning to Mr Singh): Let him answer, he wants to answer.

Judge Belinda Ang: Question is disallowed.

Mr Singh: Thank you, Your Honour.

Dr Chee: He wants to talk about integrity and I want to talk about integrity. Let's talk about integrity, Mr Lee. Is this the same integrity as you are referring to when you jailed Mr Chia Thye Poh for 32 years, when you imprisoned Dr Lim Hock Siew for 19 years, and when depriving them all –

Judge Ang: Question is disallowed.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew: May I point out to you what Singapore was when I became prime minister in 1959 and what Singapore is now. We had less than $100 million in the kitty. Now that the assets that we have and I am not disclosing this but Global Financial Services assessed Singapore's sovereign wealth fund at over $300 billion.

Dr Chee: I am impressed. Now –

Mr Lee Kuan Yew: If you are impressed, Mr Chee – Dr Chee, if you're impressed, you would not have made these allegations.

Dr Chee: Mr Lee, is this the same integrity where you're talking about declassified documents from London?

Judge Ang: Irrelevant.

Dr Chee: – that you have –

Judge Ang: The witness is not required to answer.

Dr Chee: And I would like – well, Your Honour, he's brought up integrity and I just want to be able to pursue that line just a little bit more. Is it the same integrity –

Mr Singh: Your Honour, I object to this line of questioning.

Dr Chee: That you are referring to, Mr Lee, where now we begin to know –

Justice Ang: Question is disallowed.

Dr Chee: – and as a young man, I didn't – I believed you but now I'm reading declassified documents from London saying that somehow –

Mr Singh: Your Honour –

Dr Chee: – somehow, Mr Lim Chin Siong –

Mr Singh: Your Honour, please stop him.

Dr Chee: – was in his –

Judge Ang: Dr Chee

Dr Chee: Was in his political situation, and that somehow –

Judge Ang: Your question is disallowed.

Dr Chee: – you had – I beg your pardon, Your Honour?

Justice Ang: The question is disallowed. How is this relevant to the assessment of damages?

Dr Chee: You haven't even heard my question yet. You haven't even heard my question. Let me ask the question and then you can disallow it, Your Honour.

Mr Lee remained quiet.

What happened to his earlier bravado that he would be ready to answer any question not only on this suit but also on his life? Not a word of this in the newspapers.

This is not the first time that such nonsense has taken place. Past instances involving the SDP also received such dishonest media treatment. The difference now is that we have the Internet.

The problem, however, is that the reach of cyberspace is limited compared to the mainstream press. To this extent, the PAP still has the upper hand. Hopefully, this will change.

This website will continue to reveal the exchanges that went on in the courtroom over the next few days. Be sure to check back. (See also next post.)

I don'r buy the Straits Times any longer. Nor the New Paper. But my daughter brought home the New Paper yesterday, and what I saw confirmed this posting. All Judge Ang and Singh, covering some 4 pages of a short afternoon tabloid!

This is exactly why I gave up my Pravda subscription - it's bad for one's health in general. To follow SG politics through the state media will lead to bitterness, frustration and anger for anyone with a rational mind.

Or perhaps it's just me; of all my local friends, I seem to be the only to ever get worked up on the political state of this place. The rest doesn't care, or is beyond caring.
  • C J - Dispicable
Watching this trial is like watching a grown man, forcibly snatch a lolipop away from a small child, and walking away looking like a hero.

what I have observed from the press is competition between individual papers this couple of days, ST, TNP, etc exchanging salvo at the case, competing to see how much lower can they bring Dr Chee and party's name down. It seems to me that the lower they go, the more points they'll score with the state.

The unfortunate part is that this one sided media tilt towards the ruling party can no longer carry on without further damaging their altready pit bottom reputation as a reliable media.
  • Mike - You cannot question MM like this
I like to say that CSJ cannot question MM Lee like this.

    This is total disrespect.

CSJ is like a hooligan demanding answers.

Now MM Lee is well respected by world leaders, by Superpowers.

Who is CSJ to question MM like this?

No Heads of states in the world would agree with CSJ's manner.

You have to accept that MM is Singapore's leader and founding father and respect him.

If CSJ even treats MM Lee like this, you can imagine how CSJ will treat normal Singaporeans..!

You can imagine CSJ may lose his temper with normal Singaporeans... and get beaten up.
  • Alvin
How can Dr. Chee ever make any significance progress in this case when it seems that even the judge seems to be siding with MM Lee? And with the ruling party controlling the media, how are the citizens of singapore ever able to really know what is truely happening?

No fair trial = no fair judgement.

I am not an arriviste or a temporary Singaporean nor a foreigner but as a true blue Singaporean I am truly saddened by the state of affairs of our country, very sad.

How did our country- its politics and judiciary system degenerate to such a low base level??

Its going to be a tough fight with the superpowers who have all the highly paid machinery on their side but be resolute that we have simple honest and humility on our side. Thank you Chees/SDP and Mr JB J sir.
  • mike Chan - INTERNET WILL PREDOMINATE MAINSTREAM MEDIA
Don't worry, as happened up north in MY, it will happen here if not already.
In Malaysie it was found that more malaysians were turning to the Internet for truthful political news rather than the newspapers like New ST, Star etc in the months leading to the GE 8.3.08. And what a shocker of a GE result it turned out to be!
Don't tell me the internet saturation here in S'pore is lower than Malaysia? Cannot be, as our level of wealth and education are notches above their's.
I won't be surprised if the no of bloggers viewing your sdp-site as s well as other similar blogs on a daily basis here is more than up north.
Truth will invariably and eventually rise up to the open. Believe and have faith!

The real test is whether Dr chee can get the support of the majority of the population. If he can do that, he would have won even though he has lost the case. His supporters should spread the word for him. Tell friends about this site and the situation. Convert them to this cause. You need more people on your side, otherwise you eloquent closing speech may be made in vain.

I have only one question about all this. Can Mr Chee give a breakdown of many questions were asked, how many were objected by Mr Singh, by The judge and finally how many questions did the Lees actually answer. I know some of the answers by the Lees were actually speeches. Statistics would help but the ist of questions put forward would be much more useful

I really support opposition in Singapore, and I wish for the PAP to be booted out of parliament, but i really feel that you guys cannot do much with all your rants here.
To me, i will vote against the PAP no matter who the opposition is, be it a person with a PHD or a random school dropout.

But your rants here, i feel, isnt gonna do much. coz not everyone reads ur site. i really admire your effort but i really feel you can do much. maybe try to gain the respect of the people in a particular constituency to prepare for 2011? maybe semabawang would be a good choice since PAP owned there and wont change this PAP stronghold like eunos/cheng san/probably aljunied(in 2011).
but make sure that you at least pretend to be respectful to the PAP then they will lower their guard.

and btw how do u know alot of ppl read this site? any site counters? (:

  • Oversea ex-Singaporean - Disseminate the Truth
The best way to counter one-sided reporting is to present facts on Youtube.
"Insulted" has given a good suggestion. Compile a list of how many questions were asked, how many objections, how many of the objections were sustained by the judge, and how many (how little) of the questions were actually answered by PM and MM. Also of the questions that were answered (if any) how many of them were to-the-point, instead of side-stepped.

With all these statistics, made a video as it will be the best way for dissemination, to counter main stream video. If there is anyway to present the information in Chinese on youtube, it would reach even more people!!!

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE

Come next election... financial benefits for the people, HDB upgrades, etc.

Outcome ? PAP wins yet again. (Don't believe ? Wait and see.)

Problem with the people here is that they are not united against a suppressive ruling party. So ultimately whose to blame ?

Clearly people with brains don't want this ruiling party.
  • Paul Poh
SDP, can you provide the full list of questions that Dr Chee posed to Lee Kuan Yew and state which are the ones he answered and the ones that Mr Singh objected?

It will be revealing to see which questions he avoided and which he answered.

Let the facts speak for themselves.

    Thanks.

Sometimes I wonder why is LKY behavin like a small brat. He may have, no doubt created a nice country BUT he is a man full of fear. Only a man with fear will attack everythin and everyone around him beleivin they are out to get him. Mr. Lee, because u think that way, u react as such, and as a result, people do not like u and so the whole wheel turns. A vicious cirle. Mr. Lee, are u aware of Cause and Effect? A univarsal law which governs everthin. For your deeds against Opposition members, u will have to reap what u sow. U cannot escape this law. Your death is nearing. Karma will see to it. Such is nature.

  • Thinktok - Respect must be accorded
It is obvious that the line of questioning is irrelevant. The Judge knew it, the lawyers knew it, CSJ knew it but he persisted like the proverbial woodpecker.

The law is the law and has to be like this or else the Court will go on forever.

CSJ and his team I am afraid is not going to succeed. Don't forget MM Lee is a lawyer and a damn good one at it.

CSJ should swallow his pride and abandon all hope of even hurting his reputation because his record speaks for itself.

Talking about religion, MM Lee is like Noah and CSJ is the woodpecker trying to sink the Singapore Ark by trying to make holes in it.

So please spare us, yourself and more importantly your family the embarassment and stress.

Stop bashing your stubborn head against the wall because the Ark is made of steel! And the steel is the people of Singapore lead by MM Lee and PAP.

  • A. C. - Just my opinion, don't prosecute me
I feel that in Singapore even the so-called opposition could be a fabrication by PAP. That, there is in fact, no opposition! Frightful thought.

Regardless, another head lobbed off. Look at the head-lines.

Most Singaporeans will forever be going about with their mundane lives until the day they reach their shelf-life. And deal with it, Singaporeans (majority) put themselves in this position-- they pick PAP at every election.

As for Dr. Chee, (if the papers are of any accuracy to his demeanor) dude needs to be cool & composed when he's in the heat!

Personally I feel that it's time for change for the better for Singapore, and our people. Unfortunately, either by choice, or influenced by the politically & socially engineered landscape around us, Singaporeans who want change are going to be the minority unless more step up.

Having attended the court sessions,I have to say that the defendants have done very well be it in their professional or personal capacity with their questionings and reasonings, despite the multiple obstacles being placed in every corners to frustrate them. Also, as expected we can always trust in our local medias and their stenographers to disregard any professional ethics in their reporting. As for trolls like Mike, as I have pleaded so often, please at least try to squeeze whatever little intelligence you have before writing so as to spare us the agony of reading nothingness..thanks.

Imagine how a movie review can destroy an otherwise good movie? That's why any avid movie buff will never totally believe a movie critic. But again, that's only entertainment. Over here, we Singaporeans are anxious to know whether this PAP government has mishandled certain policies (not so much as to whether Dr.Chee, MM or PM is right). It's about whether the certain points raised by SDP (purportedly ground sentiments from some quarters)have any basis of truth. So,it's for the MM and PM to convince the public through this court hearing to clarify the disputable notions. The Court and media must act impartially for all to witness and draw their own conclusions.
If you choose to go astray and get misled by a newspaper that reports selectively or even distorts the truth of a debate, how can you expect to determine who's right or wrong?
If SDP is wrong in presenting those views (as legitimate opposition),it is only right for PAP to present the facts to the citizens.
In any case, it should not be dragged into a case of personal dispute or feud.
As the saying goes: LET THE PEOPLE JUDGE.

Then again, I am wrong, as always, of course. I shall repent now and beg the forgiveness of His Imperial Majesty H and his Little Dragon Prince. Long Live The Emperor!
