Singapore Democrats

It is most unfortunate that developments in the Reform Party (RP) have come to a head causing some of its members to resign from the party. The SDP has indicated that it is in no position, nor does it wish, to comment on the matter. Our position still stands.

We have friends on both sides, both in the RP and among those who have left. We would not like to see matters deteriorate further and would like to appeal to all involved to come to an amicable settlement over the differences.

Like Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam, some of those who left the RP had also contributed to the $20,000 for the fine imposed on me a few weeks ago. These contributions were not small although they were kept private. I have met many of the members who had resigned from RP and I wish to state clearly and unambiguously that they are upright Singaporeans who care deeply about the state of this nation, Singaporeans who are willing to work for the democratic cause.

We ask all opposition supporters not to make comments that cast aspersion on either camp. Let us stop speculating about what happened within the RP, and the motivations of the actors that led to their parting of ways. Let us instead try to find ways to help resolve the issue.

In-fighting within the opposition camp, no matter which party is involved, benefits no one but the PAP. With the elections around the corner, we cannot fragment. Instead we must demonstrate solidarity that will instill confidence in the electorate to support us. We must show leadership at this crucial juncture.

In every crisis, there is opportunity. Let us look on the positive side and work to see which doors are open. In the meantime we ask all opposition parties to respect the difficult times the RP and its former members are going through, and to hold in abeyance our inclinations to offer anything other than genuine assistance.

In solidarity,

Chee Soon Juan

Well said Dr Chee. Yes let us the opposition agree to disagree and move forward in preparation for the battle ahead.

But how can we help them?

CSJ has come a long way and what he has said is the sign of a true and matured leader. I have very confidence SDP will do well this time round.

SDP: "In-fighting within the opposition camp, no matter which party is involved, benefits no one but the PAP."

    Nothing is more true.

There was speculation that those 9 resigned were moles from PAP, to disrupt RP.

If they were indeed moles from PAP then there are better targets like SDA, WP, or SDP for PAP to attack. No point for PAP to plant moles in RP. Lame speculation from the internet.

It is plain naive to suspect those 9 resigned as moles from PAP.

Solidarity is indeed the keyword here; the single objective for oppositions is to help the people overcome PAP.

Would suggest SDP invite those 9 resigned to seriously consider joining SDP as long as they can demonstrate alignment of interest to serve the people and agreement to SDP strategy to achieve this goal.

Time is running out, would SDP act fast.

Such "divisions" among the opposition must be seen in perspective. People with commitment and passion, of the leader-type, will have strong stands and therefore "difficult" to get along. Occurs within the PAP also.

Remember Toh Chin Chye, who amplained of Lee's autocracy and even criticised his policies in parliament, requiring Lee to characteristically respond saying "it is unbecoming of an old guard to hack at the foundation he spent the greater part of his life building", and Jek Yuen Tong, who criticised the many leaps of ministerial pay made after he had to step down, inviting Raja's LKY-style response, reminding Jek that he had had no qualms "pocketing" the first increases when he was minister? Even Goh Keng Swee signified serious misgivings against LKY in his written response to him when first appointed Education Minister with a brief he complained of being, I think, curt and lacking in rationale and courtesy. LKY responded, attempting to justify the brevity, thus "proving" Goh wrong, and he released both letters to the press, claiming "Singaporeans have come of age" for the exchange to be published.

Which is better, making an appearance to stick together for practical, strategic reasons, or being candid? Keep in mind that PAP leaders today can have motives other public service not to be candid, with their million dollar slaries at stake. Opposition members have nothing material to lose, indeed more to gain materially by resigning!

Maybe PAP paid them money to cause trouble and leave the RP. Like what happened to the opposition coalition in Perak when 3 of the opposition MPs suddenly defected to BN side and caused the ruiling coaltion to crumble. The Sultan of Perak gave the mandate to BN out of sudden.

Awesome Words

If the work is something that is worthwhile, then, regardless whether we can achieve it or not, make attempt. That is, I think, important. Courageous.
