The PAP is handing out goodies like there was no tomorrow. It has to. Because it's desperate. It knows that without these feel-good giveaways, there would be trouble at the next elections.
This is why it is handing out up to $800 per voter on 1 May 2011. And you can be sure the polling day will not be far from that date. But if you think that the goody (and the rest of the budgetary items) are financially attractive, stop and look again.
The Singapore Democrats will present an analysis of the Budget and show how Singaporeans continue to be fleeced. The SDP Budget committee met immediately after the Finance Minister released details of the Budget. Going through the numbers, we found that Mr Tharman's offers fell far short of what was needed to help Singaporeans and Singapore's economy.
This Budget is essentially no different from previous budgets. It is basically a Budget full of pork designed to buy votes especially during an election year than one that would address the real problems of Singaporeans.
The SDP's Shadow Budget, on the other hand, is genuinely a developmental and progressive one and has been drawn up to ensure that we invest in, not exploit, our most important resource: our people.
Dr Vincent Wijeysingha will present a breakdown of the Mr Tharman's Budget at SDP's annual dinnerKampung Night tonight. He will also compare it to the Shadow Budget and demonstrate how the PAP's version will not benefit Singaporeans, and that the people will be better off under the SDP's plan.
Dr Wijeysingha will focus on the following items announced by the Minister:
The Growth and Share package
The HDB grant for first-time, low-income buyers
The increase of $100 of foreign workers' levy
The abolition of the TV and radio licence
The increase of expenditure for Mindef
The increase of the PMO's budget
The media have been invited to attend Dr Wijeysingha's address and the annual dinner, as well as to the press conference thereafter.
If you would like to attend the dinner, please call Ms Jaslyn Go at 9239-3133.

BryanT - Feedback to Vincent
I am reserving comments on SDP's so-called Alternative/Shadow Budget for the time being.
But after watching the video, I would like to give some pointers to Vincent: Your sitting posture when replying speaking is not proper.
You seemed to be leaning back on the back-rest of the chair which gives the impression of slouching, which was aggravated by the fact that you seemed to be sitting slanted (toward the right).
Occasionally you had your right arm on the bad rest, which also give an outlook of arrogance.
Pointing at members of the audience is also a political "no-no".
I assume that Vincent does all these unconsciously, but I hope he will take these observations positively, so that at least the public impression of him can be enhanced.

If Singaporeans swallow the $800 sweetener, then they surely deserve more PAP rule.
The Bribe is merely a short term fix. The PAP is still refusing to address the problem of long term sustainability.

All wayang by the PAP. There is nothing new or great about their budget as claimed by the papers and the rest of the PAP Mps. Its always the same. When the election is here, they give out Massive hong bau to bride us with money and after that, they increase everything to a new level to take back that money but with interest for them. There is no mention or solution for our high cost of living, there is no reduction in transport fees, there is no menion or solution about the high cost of HDB flats. Noting kosong as usual. Its always we the PAP gives you the people some money to tide this over. But will the money last till the next election, NO!!! even one month it can't last. They are still treating us like bloody idiots. Fine, we vote them out. Time for a huge makeover. A new government, a new policy and new rules. Improved version I should say. SDP proposals are good, it enable us to save and helps us to hold on till the next election. And CPF is our own money and not theirs, we decide what to do with our own saving. Who can last till 80 years nowadays. Ya ya if you are MM Lee and has the whole healthcare system under your feet, you do can last till 80 plus but it does not mean that you are able to lived forever. Anyway he can't even lengthen his wife life span. That show PAP lies that MM Lee is a God that don't make mistake. He do make mistake. His wife is dead.

April Fool - BryanT is right
Regardless of Bryan's political agenda, I must admit that he is right on every count this time.
The sitting posture and finger-pointing is rude.

quantum - BryanT runs out of ideas
You reserve comment basically because you can find no flaws in this piece of hard work of the SDP.
So instead, you chose to focus your entire essay on the posture of one speaker.
I think your butt is in your head.

April Fool, Lky did that many times to the Malays community when he warned the Malays not to cause any trouble for Singapore. He did that for 2 of the tudong issues where he forced the Mufti and the rest of the Malays MPs to sit with him and he made those gesture. So Dr W was just taking a cue from this old man. Nobody pointed out how rude was LKY towards the Malays/Muslims community to begin with. But Dr W was just trying to bring up good points comparing with LKY who instead made it look like he is the Boss scolding his workers.

FreedomT,
Yes, LKY was rude and has always been. Does that excuse Dr Wijey, a newbie ? In this matter, Dr Wijey should not be 'taking a cue' from LKY; he should look to his right and see how Dr Chee presents himself before the media.
A flaw is a flaw. It's childish to complain that LKY was even worse. Taking a cue from LKY in this matter will not make Dr Wijey a better presenter or win him votes.

BryanTi - BryanT: A troll of a lower intellectual calibre
I agree with quantum. BryanT is really out of ideas. Greater minds will discuss the ideas in the Shadow Budget. Lesser minds only discuss the trivial things.
The hard truth is that Bryan Ti is of a lower intellectual calibre that hinders him from engaging in a proper discussion on progressive budget ideas. Therefore, he "reserves comment" and gossips like a fishmonger. What a climb down for a know-it-all, higher than thou internet troll.

Please refer to this article posted on the YPAP FB:
The YPAP moderator appended the comment that this 'measure is in line with the Government's policy of improving real wages for Singaporeans and reducing our reliance on foreign workers'. (As I said, the words are curiously the same ones used by the SDP in their proposal to reduce the intake of foreigners into Singapore.)
The normal interpretation of 'reducing our reliance on foreign workers' is that we will gradually reduce the total NUMBER of foreigners working in Singapore. Thus, hypothetically, if there are currently 100 000 foreign workers in Singapore, 'reducing our reliance' on them would mean bringing that number down to first, 80 000, say, then progressing to 55 000 and so on.
That is the impression that most people would form from reading those words.
But absolutely none of the statements by the PAP has ever indicated that that's what they intend. They have only said the the RATES of increase will not be as high as it was previously. (But the actual numbers will still increase.) Thus, if the number of foreigners working in Singapore used to rise by, say, 200 000 every month, the only thing that the PAP is perpared to do is to bring that down to, say, 150 000.
Indeed, didn't Lee Hsien Loong say last year that the they were revising the intended intake of foreigners last year from 100 000 to 80 000? That is still a net increase of 80 000 foreigners; the overall numbers continue to increase.
Not surprisingly, neither has the PAP said anything about any downward revision of the 6.5m population target.
We continue to be misled and deceived by the PAP.
YPAP can use the words that the SDP uses in their proposal. But the PAP government intends none of the substance of the SDP's proposed policy alternative.

Brendan - Take the Budget but vote wisely !
Can I suggest that SDP recommends we take the goodies, but vote for opposition ?? The budget is, afterall tax payers hard earned money anyway.
And, lastly encourage us to use the budget to help others in need (if we don't need the money)

quantum - Goodies?
What goodies? They are just a portion of what actually belongs to the people, and they are not even totally returned.
April Fool: BryanT has a butt in his head, thats why only shit comes out of his mouth. The SDP man is plain tired, not rude , because unlike Thaman , he does not have a big team of manpower under him. If you are not a fool , be it April or May, why don't you concentrate on the budget instead?

Calm28 - No Housing Grant
Already, the high valuation and high COV of resale flats are ridiculous! If HDB can raise the valuation to heights, why can't the budget raise the housing grant to heights. By raising the valuation, PAP can collect more taxes. If it collects much taxes, will it give back to the people through higher housing grants? Sad to say, graduates may stay in 3 room flats. Instead of reaching Swiss standard of living, we will reach Japanese standard of living if PAP will still be ruling decades later.
