Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew has urged local Muslims to "be less strict on Islamic observances" to aid integration and the city-state's nation-building process.

Singapore has a predominantly Chinese population, with minority races including Muslim Malays and Indians, and Lee has always stressed the importance of racial harmony.

"I would say today, we can integrate all religions and races except Islam," he said in "Lee Kuan Yew: Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going," a new book containing his typically frank views on the city-state and its future.

"I think we were progressing very nicely until the surge of Islam came and if you asked me for my observations, the other communities have easier integration -- friends, intermarriages and so on..." he stated.

"I think the Muslims socially do not cause any trouble, but they are distinct and separate," Lee added, calling on the community to "be less strict on Islamic observances."

During the book's launch on Friday, the self-described "pragmatist" warned Singaporeans against complacency, saying the largely ethnic Chinese republic was still a nation in the making.

Describing Singapore in the book as an "80-storey building on marshy land," Lee said it must contend with hostility from larger Muslim neighbours.

"We've got friendly neighbours? Grow up... There is this drive to put us down because we are interlopers," he said, citing alleged Malaysian and Indonesian efforts to undermine Singapore's crucial port business.

Singapore was ejected from the Malaysian federation in 1965 in large part due to Kuala Lumpur's preferential policies for ethnic Malays, and has since built up Southeast Asia's most modern military to deter foreign aggression.

Turning to local politics, Lee said the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), which has been in power since 1959 when Singapore gained political autonomy from colonial ruler Britain, will someday lose its grip on power.

"There will come a time when eventually the public will say, look, let's try the other side, either because the PAP has declined in quality or the opposition has put up a team which is equal to the PAP... That day will come."

"In the next 10 years to 20 years, I don't think it'll happen. Beyond that, I cannot tell."

Lee said that despite a survey showing the contrary, he believed Singaporeans were not yet ready for a non-ethnic-Chinese prime minister.

"A poll says 90 percent of Chinese Singaporeans say they will elect a non-Chinese as PM. Yes, this is the ideal. You believe these polls? Utter rubbish. They say what is politically correct," he stated.

He also defended the policy of promoting marriage between highly-educated Singaporeans, a policy seen by critics as a form of social engineering, and dismissed the notion of love at first sight.

"People get educated, the bright ones rise, they marry equally well-educated spouses. The result is their children are likely to be smarter than the children of those who are gardeners," he said.

"It's a fact of life. You get a good mare, you don't want a dud stallion to breed with your good mare. You get a poor foal."

People who are "attracted by physical characteristics" may regret it, he said.

Lee also revealed that he had donated to charity all his earnings of S$13 million ($10 million) since stepping down as prime minister in 1990 after 31 years in power.

Singapore's cabinet ministers are the highest paid in the world as part of a strategy to prevent corruption and attract talent from the private sector.

Lee, who holds the special title Minister Mentor, now serves as an adviser to his son Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who came to power in 2004.

Amid all the hard-edged talk, Lee showed his tender side when asked about his late wife Kwa Geok Choo, who died aged 89 in October last year.

The Islamic community is the only one religion not plagued by corruption. This means that they are still true to their cause and not converted to worshipping money like the rest in Singapore. Perhaps thats why they are so hard to be integrated into this "Money" religion of Singapore.

Islam forbids all Muslims to play with Money politics. The Muslims here are peaceful and only am interested in their afterlife. So since they are at peace with the rest of us, we don't cause any trouble for them. Don't believe in what this senile old man is saying about the Malays and Muslims. He is just feeling fed up with the Malays for preventing him to be the PM of Malaysia. He is just a loser.

In what way LKY wanted Muslims to be less strict for what we have been doing are ordered to us by Al Mighty. Pray 5 times a day, Friday's prayers for the male, fasting during Ramadan, NO PORK and alcohol. Female must wear tudong when come to puberty. There is no such thing as less strict Muslims and more strict Muslims in Islam. He is siao as usual.

    less strict means
    - Pray whenever you can, but if you have something important, then you don't have to pray.
    - Go for Friday prayers, but if there's an emergency or if there's a more important event, you can don't go.
    - Fast during Ramadan, but if there's some health concerns, then you can drink a little or eat a little too, ie don't overdo it until it becomes a health issue.
    - No Pork, but don't starve to death because you don't want to eat Pork.
    - No Alcohol, heck a beer once in a while should be fine as long as you don't overdo it. On a sidenote, if you read the Quran, it says that alcohol is bad if you overdo it, therefore its better to refrain from it entirely.
    - Wearing the Tudung is okay and you should wear it if you want. But if the weather gets too hot, then doing without it is okay as well. Basically, use your discretion on whether to put on or not.

That's what he meant by less strict.

Buwakasha, you are trying to be funny here and ignorant to the real facts. All these that you have stated here is like a child's play. All you wrote here are against Islam requirements.
  • Buwakasha
    "against Islam requirements."

I'm not trying to be funny. I'm pointing out that adherence to religious principles must be balanced with practicality. For example, the monks at Shaolin religiously eat only vegetables, not meat as their requirement in their practice of Buddhism. However, when they travel abroad to give demonstrations or talks, they are allowed to eat whatever they can get, meat or vegetables. Similarly, my uncle is a buddhist and does not eat beef, but on a trip to New Zealand, they had nothing but beef on the train. He ate the beef anyway.

As for muslims, I find muslims overseas more tolerant of these issues. They are banned from pork and alcohol in their own countries, but when they travel, they do consume pork and alcohol.

There was a case in Saudi Arabia when a girl school caught fire and the religious authorities did not allow the girls to flee because they were not "appropriately dressed". (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/1874471.stm) and many of them died in the fire.

Now, tell me, if you were them, would you allow the girls to leave the burning building? That's what "less strict" means.

Buwakasha, there are 2 sects of Islam Sunni and Shia with different tradition and within the 2 sects are different school of thought. For Sunni Islam there are Hambali, Maliki, Hanafi and Shafie. Muslims in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei if you look at the Malays are Shafie, Indians Muslims are mostly Maliki and Indonesia Muslims are either Maliki or Hambali. But there is no issue on being able to consume pork or alcohol at all ok. For those you have stated have infact disobey one of the rulling. You might see some Malays drinking alcohol at the coffeeshop. But these are a few ok. Pig are considered unclean because during the great floods at the time of prophet Noh, Pig was eating everything in front of God including the dead and shits. Alcohol as stated in the holy text are forbidden as it kill the cells in the brain and liver. And make a person not himself but give a chance for satan to take over. You might don't know that Moses also told the Jews not to eat Pigs. Jews also cannot eat pork as it is not allowed in their relogion as well. We can only consumed pork if only in extreme cases such as there are no foods around and we are dying from starvation but this also there is a clause for it. For now as there are foods around, it is HARAM. What LKY is telling the Muslims is that to do it eventhough it is haram for the sake of Singapore. This world will come to an end, the afterlife is more important and we the Muslims would not do this ok. Anything against Islam, we won't do it.

Honestly, you have to improve your English. Next you said,

There is a big divide between Shia and Sunni, but between the 4 schools of Sunni islam, they are almost 90% in agreement in all aspects. They are not separate schools either and scholars of one school can move on to be members of other schools, ie there's no fundamental disagreement or animosity between the schools. All of them teach a very strict interpretation and adherence to the rules. However, most muslims can't be bothered and they are "less strict" and that to me is better than sticking to the rules.

    You said,

"You might see some Malays drinking alcohol at the coffeeshop. But these are a few ok."

That's not true. Its not a few. You don't have to look very hard, but I see many Malays drinking and smoking. As to why you want to ban pork and alcohol but allow smoking is beyond me. Smoking is like 1000% worst for you than drinking.

Pigs were unclean then, they are not now. However, due to religious observance, its okay to avoid pork. But if you have no other option, say you are on tour and all you have were food that have some pork products in them, are you going to starve? No, just be "less strict" and have it so you don't die of hunger.

    Exactly,
"We can only consumed pork if only in extreme cases such as there are no foods around and we are dying from starvation but this also there is a clause for it."

That would be less strict, but the Saudi religious police will rather you die than to allow you to consume pork.

"Anything against Islam, we won't do it."

That's fine as long as you don't stop me (a non-muslim) from doing them.
