Singapore’s prime minister says the city-state will allow in fewer foreign workers this year than previously announced.

Lee Hsien Loong said in a National Day Rally speech that about 80,000 foreigners will enter Singapore this year, fewer than the more than 100,000 he announced last month.

The surge of foreigners living in Singapore has become a hot political topic in the lead-up to the next general election, which the government must call by February 2012.

Local media have reported growing complaints by Singaporeans about poor quality customer service at restaurants and retail stores, crowded subways and growing competition for jobs and housing.
