The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is turning out to be an unmitigated disaster. It is running way over budget (projected spending is close to $400 million, triple the original budget of $104 million) and attracting the interest of no one in particular (more than 90 percent of Singaporeans don't know what it is, mush less care about it).

How did this Government get it so wrong? You don't need to be President Scholars to calculate that in a year when the World Cup is staged, you don't try to compete with it for attention in the sports world. That's not rocket science, it's just plain common sense.

In the hard and real world of sports, who is going to pay to watch 14-18-year-olds compete especially after the football mania in South Africa? (This is in the aftermath of the authorities charging an arm and a leg to watch the World Cup when many of our neighbours in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia got to watch the matches inexpensively or even free?)

Only a small percentage of the YOG tickets (about six percent) has been sold to the public. As a result, our school students have been mobilised by the Ministry of Education to attend the events.

Not only did our expensive cabinet not foresee the World Cup timing debacle and overestimated the public's interest in the YOG, it has completely underestimated the operating budget.

Admittedly, budgeting is not a simple process; things will go wrong even with the best-made plans. But to be $300 million over-budget in a one-off event that has a fixed start- and end-period is unforgivable. In such a scenario, revenue and expenditure can be estimated with considerable accuracy.

So how did the Government get it so wrong? Over-spending by three times the original budget signals massive incompetence.

It gets worse. World-renowned athletes Messrs Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt are giving the event here a miss - and they are  appointed International Olympic Committee ambassadors! If IOC ambassadors cannot come to an IOC event, why did we bother to host it in the first place?

On top of this, it is reported that the Singapore Government agreed to pay nearly $1 million to refurbish a stadium in Jamaica in return for Mr Bolt's help in marketing the YOG. What has come of the deal now that Mr Bolt is not coming?

In a nutshell, we're spending $400,000,000 to stage an event that no one really cares about. Contrast this to the $110 million that this Government puts aside for social programmes for our needy. Such profligacy can only happen it a autocratic state. No government in a democracy knowing that it will be held accountable for the dollars it spends would be so bold with public money.

Like many events in the recent past such as the Mas Selamat escape, the MRT break-in, and the floods, there needs to be some accounting. Regarding the present matter the PAP needs to answer some questions:

  • How was the budget prepared and why was there such a huge discrepancy? Were the planners sloppy in their work?
  • Who is responsible for this mistake?
  • More importantly, where will the funds for the short-fall come from?

  • mohammadnizam - YOG is not all about Sports, and Sports Fans
Being a teacher in a Singapore school, I've learnt that the target interest group are the youths. They are immersed in a range of activities leading to the games. It's no wonder 90% people polled on channelnewsasia show no interest, as these people mostly adults. The youths on the other hand are very excited and have benefitted from Singapore organizing the YOG. Without the YOG, Singaporean youths go about their lives without such eventful moments. I've witnessed how much the youths have experienced and learnt from Singapore organizing the games. The games is Youth Olympic Games not for any reason but for the Youths.

There will be hiccups, but we must all embrace YOG because it's our country that's hosting it. Opposition or not, we must think of the youths. I don't fancy the incumbent government in some areas, but there's bound to be unhappiness with things. They've done well as long as at least one youth has learnt much from it.

Even my son age 21,will not support this stupid YOg,he said wasting time on this,I hope it will be a failure, during the event, might have thunderstorm, flood, trees fall down blocking the Yog lane.Nia Mah !! Teo ser (No)Luck and Vivian Ba have to be sacked for this over budget.I won't blame the ministers if their pay is around $200 to $250k per year, but collecting millions of $$ and yet fail to plan properly, it is a shame.I wouldn't dare to accept high pay if I can't perform.Nia Mah !!!
  • tewniaseng
It is not worth spending $400 millions just to benefit the youths ? The pap has other motive and agenda ? Don't be con by the wolf !! The money can be put to good use if it wants to benefit the youth in other ways ? It just don't benefit the whole populations especially old people like me.Ask MCYS to give us extra $30,Vivian the pig said no way.

It is all just part of PAP's political agenda to keep themselves in power.

YOG is just but PAP opprtunity to showcase S'pore to foreigners.

Not just any foreigners but foreigners who wish to emigrate to another country.

That is why it's pulling out all stops and overbudgeting 3 to 4 times its original budget to impress, impress and impress these potential country-hopping foreigners.

New immigrants are now the new staunchest supporters of the PAP.

Did you for a moment think PAP is doing it for the better good of all Singaporeans. Naahhh! Survey shows that the locals are not bloody interested!

Like I said, it's all politics and gripping on to power for the PAP.

Look I'm all for the youths participating and having a youth event.

But seriously, do we need to spend $400million dollars to justify this event and to try to impress a world who doesn't give a hoot about your YOG?

I'd rather let such a youth sport event grow within Southeast Asia countries. And slowly alleviating the awareness and culture. It takes generations. Just like the Singapore-Selangor matches in Malaysia Cup. It is a national affair and everyone throws their support. We even turn out in droves to watch the match!

Now that is a culture worth keeping. Not some sporting event suddenly popping out of nowhere and taking to take the world by storm! Aren't we trying too hard to be who we are NOT?

Take for example the recent World Cup matches. Are we seriously serious (pun intended) about sports? Or are we just interest in making money? We seem to be trying too hard to burst onto an international level, be it table-tennis, badminton, etc.

Who are we kidding? We have never been known for sports, nor are we a sports-centred country like Australia! If we are serious about being a sports-centred country, then for the love of the people, broadcast free sports channel for international events! And don't expect us to pay for the World Cup subscription fees.

It comes with investing in our youths as young as below 10 yrs old, and no distraction of trying to achieve academically too, like the Singapore Sports School. A professional athelete is focused on what he is doing.

Another swipe at Goal 2010. We all know it is going to fail. Wny bother to waste the money? Are we trying too hard to be everything, yet good at nothing? We don't need a rocket scientist to know if Goal 2010 will succeed or fail. Just ask a local kopi-thiam ah pek and he will tell you it's impossible.

Unless we become a sports-centred nation and start investing in sports like the German soccer team, we are always many steps behind. Most of that team players are under 25 yrs of age. They have a few more World Cups to play and with their experience they have now, they are a force to be reckoned with in the next international game.

Many countries pump in millions to give their youths proper training to be Olmypians, not 'buy' foreigners and hope that the sporting culture can be rubbed onto their people. I am quite sure it doesn't work that way.

There is a lesson to learn: Not everything can be achieved with money. Heartware often cannot be bought.

  • seebeng - What abour massive corruption?
((So how did the Government get it so wrong? Over-spending by three times the original budget signals massive incompetence.))

It may not just be "incompetence". It could be massive corruption. The budget for the Commonwealth Games in a couple of months in India has similarly ballooned. Investigative journalism there has revealed widespread irregularities in the purchase of items and in building of infrastructure for the games. Contracts were awarded to dubious companies with links to politicians and high officials that had quoted exorbitant prices and collected huge sums.

In Singapore, it would be interesting to know the names of companies and the individuals involved that are tasked with hosting the YOG. Particulars of the firms involved and their directors could be obtained from the registry of companies and businesses.

If only our newspapers are allowed to report freely and fairly, they could easily unearth numerous “happenings” taking place in our squeaky clean Singapore!

  • Political_law - Strange phenomenon
I boarded a bus that was heading towards ang mo kio at 3pm today (monday). The bus was packed with standing commuters. Surprisingly, they were not school-going students, but adults. What were these people doing on a weekday afternoon? Shouldn't they be at work at that time? Are they, like me, adding to the jobless rank or are they merely foreigners? I don't remember seeing such a crowd on the same bus 10 years ago on a weekday afternoon. What a strange phenomenon!
  • Dick - 300M over budget or corruption?
Can opposition call for an audit into why and where this extra 300M is spend on. Which organization, company or individual are the main beneficiary.

Ho many of these beneficiary have direct and in direct links to PAP, their agents and proxy.
  • seebeng - Is there "opposition" to question the Govt?
Over the years, the "opposition" in Singapore has been cowed into confining itself to operate within the OB (out-of-bounds) markers set by the PAP to earn the accolade of “credible opposition”.

By brining the entire state apparatuses, in particular the judiciary, the media, etc, the PAP has been able to create the façade that everything is above board in “squeaky clean” Singapore. So much so that the extra amount of close to $300 million now sanctioned for the YOG is speculated to be due to an “oversight” and not in anyway even remotely connected to corruption. Such is the stranglehold the PAP has over all things in Singapore.

The staggering losses of $140 billion by GIC and Temasek remain unaccounted for till this day and the PAP government goes about its business as if nothing has happened. And the domesticated “opposition” also pretends that nothing could have gone wrong with the “honest and clean” PAP govt.

As a result of the approved opposition giving “passing grade” to the government and by the constant propaganda through the controlled media, the people are lulled into believing that everything is alright. Massive corruption in government projects is the last thing that comes to the minds of such people who are exposed to regular doses of orchestrated “news and views” by the state media.

Despite all this, those who are brave enough to raise the just issues of government accountability and transparency, get dragged before a compliant judiciary and persecuted and vilified by a castrated media that remain at the beck and call of a dictatorial regime.

  • tewniaseng
If the oppostions are strong enough, (not 2 seats ),like in Malaysia, they can dig out many corruption cases involving ministers, the recent one former minister,Ling involved in the cheating case of Port Klang free trade zone.In order to dig out Temasek or any misappropriation of funds by the government, we need to have 30 or 40 oppositions in parliament, which I don't think is possible because Singaporeans don't like oppositions, they prefer Pap,never mind if they gamble away our reserves.
  • seebeng - No need to wait for 30 or 40
The late Mr J B Jeyaretnam single handedly ferreted out and exposed the HDB conveyancing by one single law firm called Lee & Lee. Mr Tang Liang Hong was able to graphically describe to us the extent of corruption involving the Lee family members in their avaricious “purchase” of luxury condominiums from public-listed HPL Properties.

There is no need to wait till 30 or 40 opposition members in parliament to raise the murky side of the so-called honest and clean PAP government. In the meanwhile, we don’t need the couple of “credible opposition” in the House collecting $14,000 a month salary and waiting to enjoy their life-long pension in exchange for their stony silence and operating within the OB markers set by their PAP paymaster.

It’s preposterous to claim that “Singaporeans don’t like oppositions(sic)“ when the entire “electoral process” is under the control of the PAP that unilaterally decides where and how to draw electoral boundaries at the last minute, how to “fix” the opposition, how to reduce the number of single member constituencies by enlarging the GRC fraud, and making sure of almost half the constituencies go untested on Nomination Day.

By the way, it’s not PAP gambling “away our reserves” but siphoning them off to their secret bank accounts.
