Singapore Democrats

Those of you who have been following the on-going saga of the Straits Times' refusal to publish Dr Chee Soon Juan's reply to Mr Paul Fernandez may think you've seen and heard it all from the newspaper.

Well, you haven't.

The latest twist from Mr Yap Koon Hong, the Forum Editor, is that the Straits Times will not publish Dr Chee's letter because – now hold on to your seat – the newspaper "does not carry letters which have been published elsewhere." Elsewhere being the SDP website.

What has the reply being posted on the SDP's website anything to do with the Straits Times publishing it in the page that carried Mr Fernandez's letter?

The Straits Times is a national daily, albeit a state-controlled one. The SDP's website is, well, a political party website. The readership is vastly different.

Dr Chee's was not an unsolicited letter already published in another newspaper. If this were the case, the Straits Times would have a valid reason to not reproduce the letter. In this instance, however, Dr Chee's letter was a reply sent to the Straits Times in response to a specific letter carried by the same newspaper.

And why this reason now? Remember that the newspaper said when it first received Dr Chee's letter: "We will publish it if you trim it down and confine it to the issues raised by Mr Paul Fernandez."

Note that the concerns were, one, the letter's length and, two, the pertinence of its contents. There was no mention about the reply being posted on the SDP's website which, by the way, was done four days earlier.

One week later (and 11 days after Dr Chee's reply was posted on the website), the Straits Times repeated its position: "We shall publish your letter if you confine it to the issues raised by Mr Paul Fernandez."

Again, no mention of the fact that the SDP had already posted Dr Chee's reply on its website.

When Dr Chee emailed Mr Yap a third time, this time asking the editor to point out which parts of the letter were not pertinent, he received this reply today: "I note that you have published your reply on the Singapore Democratic Party website. As a matter of policy, The Straits Times Forum page does not carry letters which have been published elsewhere."

Apparently not wanting to point out which parts of Dr Chee's letter were not relevant, the newspaper now changes tack and, for the first time in more than two weeks, says that it would not publish it for this reason.

If this is really the case, why does the newspaper regularly reproduce op-ed pieces written in other newspapers?

And why does the Straits Times publish stories from the PAP even though they are posted on the party's website?

The truth is not because Dr Chee's letter was posted on the SDP's website and therefore, under Straits Times policy, ruled out from being published in the Forum page.

No, it is that the media will publish criticisms of the Singapore Democrats but will find all sorts of excuses for not publishing our replies – unless, of course, they can be amended to the point acceptable to the PAP.

The length of the letters, pertinence of the points, and the publication elsewhere are just unseemly excuses adopted by an unseemly organisation passing itself off as the media.

  • Aidil Omar - Shame on you, ST!
It is all too obvious isn't it? It is a glaring fact that these are two different readership and yet they choose to be unreasonable.

Having said that, for always being a mere pawn and mouthpiece for the PAP government, this is what we have to say:

    Shame on you, ST :!:

    I support Straits Times.

The state should have a propaganda agency to spread state propaganda.

The Straits Times is part of that propaganda system in this country.

But an independent media industry should also exist.

There shouldn't be a monopoly of propaganda.

So Straits Times, go on and proudly spread your state propaganda and agenda, I support you.

I buy frozen meat you know.

    Am I good? :)

Editors always want to edit letters. It is their jobs, otherwise they would be jobless. I think Dr Chee should let him do the editing but asked that they published the sentance "For full unedited version of this reply, please refer to SDP website".
  • State's Times
Straits Times is for wrapping fish.
  • Oh Please - I could have edited your piece to get it published
What's your point? Any Ah Beng and Ah Seng on the street would know after reading your reply that a Singapore paper like ST would never publish it. You should jolly well know better after all your "battles". You knew what the ST editor meant when he asked you to "confine" the issues. Your letter had so much blatant, anti-PAP content in it. Is this your first day in Singapore? You could have got your point across to Mr Fernandez easily to be read by the general public, but then that would have been the end of the story, isn't it? And you don't want that to happen. You want more drama, to make a fuss over the censorship of the state-controlled media, so more people will be won to your side. That, to me, is propaganda too. I'm not saying that ST is in the right. But in the context of living in our society and under this style of leadership, I can see through you motive like glass.

Nope, The ST is for wrapping frozen meat.
  • Paul Poh
I thought frozen meat already packed nicely?

    How about wrapping dog shit?
  • John
bush meeting Goh CT (or met0. Why don't you send a letter to Bush about this? America and affect regime change you know....
  • Gary Seet
Shitty times are used to pick up dog poo.
Seriously...why bother about what the blind read???
Dr Chee, just move on and do wat u usually do.
  • Mike - Why So Troublesome over a Letter?
Please note that the editor of ST has the right to edit any letter it publishes.

SDP should understand this and please don't fret over an edited version of your reply letter.

At least, be happy that your letter is published.

Anyway, most Singaporeans are more interested to look at advertisements for overseas holiday tours than to be really interested in those letters.

And about human rights in Singapore. Isn't everyone in Singapore free to travel out of the country for study or tour?

Now, that's Human Rights and so Human Rights is okay in Singapore.

    There's a lot of freedom here. B)

  • Bernard Chan - Straits Times can't even lie properly
Just stop wasting your time with the the ST. Focus on your non-violent protest. drop leaflets and stickers into all letters boxes to promote your website.

Organize a movement to support Lee Kuan Yew ...Singaporeans stop being complacent..a WAKE UP call movement initiated by MM Lee Kuan Yew... A movement to reshape Singapore...a movement to justify that all Singaporeans has the duty to question the operation of the security of the nation, the financial matters of the nation (GIC investment, CPF and what have YEW)..the RIGHT to KNOW
  • Gary Teoh
It is open secret that ST normally don't entertain opposition party.
  • nick
    wat a bunch of bollocks
  • joehancl - Light and darkness
People who live in the dark are afraid of light. Maybe your words can kill. Or they have not the intell. to parry with you in debate. Most likely they have to refer back to their father as children do, the father of S'pore. Why does he not retire and live out his long life in peace and harmony with his family? I wonder.
  • Paul Poh
What if SDP controlled the mainstream media in this country and spread purely SDP propaganda?

Sing the praises of SDP, PAP no coverage, all criticism of PAP.

    You like that PAP?

There CANNOT be a monopoly of information in a country PAP.

    It is too dangerous.

There should be a clear state propaganda agency to be used by the state, so everybody knows and is aware that is state propaganda.

Co-existing with the state propaganda agency should be an independent but regulated independent media industry.

There should also be media watchdog groups as well.

That is the proper way to organise the mainstream mass media in a state.

We should have a lively and creative media industry, giving us diverse views, debate and discussion.

Not everyday state propaganda state propaganda state propaganda.

    Nothing but state propaganda.

    Let it develop PAP.

Stop trying to monopolise the media and use it to control people so that they will vote for you.

    Disgusting and shameless and selfish.
  • tunkudon - ST suck sillypore suck
ya i think better move on and find other venue to let more pp know more about how dirty they are .
  • John
    I agree with Mike.
  • Isay
Dear Mike, You sure "There's a lot of freedom here"? Maybe it should read, Un"limited freedom"?

And about human rights in Singapore. "Isn't everyone in Singapore free to travel out of the country for study or tour?" China too allowed people to travel, but do they have political freedom, human rights? Can they express themselves freely? BTW, Dr Chee Soon Juan, the leader of SDP is not permitted to travel out of Singapore. How?
  • Sunny - Reports by SPH always questionable
Be it ST, ZB, WB, XM, the reason for it to be there is not to provide the people with accurate info and happenings around you.
It there only to provide its people what PAP wants. And sometime or most of the time brainwash its people to think what they want them to think. Just like what the Communist China is doing.
This is very sad, when people lost their rights to know the truth. Its distressing even more when many are not even aware of it. Talking about poor Singaporean (not finiancially but in the thoughts) :(
  • John
Stupid you see what freedom of speech does? You can't even reach out to the populus
