Singapore registered 32,630 new-born babies in the first 10 months of this year, local media reported on Friday.
According to local TV broadcaster Channel NewsAsia, the figure is far short of the 50,000 needed to replace the population each year. For the whole of 2008, 39,826 babies were born in Singapore.
The broadcaster said that some sociologists argue that one important reason for this lack of improvement in birth rate is the state of the economy.
"A lot of family planning decision is being made based on the economy, like whether a person can keep their job, maintain their job. Their salary over the couple of years would be a main determinant," Chang Yau Hoon, from the School of Social Sciences at the Singapore Management University, was quoted as saying.

*rising inflation, our foods & drinks is costing more (Singapre strong currency)
*rising deflation, these days the profits is razor thin (influx of cheap products) however rentals keep going up,
consumers only buys on heavy discounts.
*continous cost cutting measure, hold on as long as possible hoping for your competitors to go for Chapter 11 (too many suppliers going for the same pie) Just look at the increasing shopping malls provding the same old service fast food resturants, hair stylish, footcourts, electroic products, designer clothes)
*multi-task work, you pay alittle more doing longer hours jobs (personal quality time for your own kids?)
*old age, there is no such things as retirement anymore, they too had to work longer, keep on working for more years to come (don't depend on them to look after the grandchildren)
We can go on and on.... whats is fu**ing wrong with our country. Do you feel good having kids in a uncertain future? While those fat cats want more salary?
