A repeat of the high crowd numbers seen last year is unlikely for the second edition of Singapore's floodlit Grand Prix in less than one month.

100,000 spectators watched the action at the Marina Bay street venue in 2008, but so far only 60,000 tickets for this year's race have been sold.

"Last year was an unusual year, it was the inaugural event so there was tremendous interest from the word go," government official S.Iswaran is quoted as saying by the local newspaper Sunday Times.

"This year, it's more typical of an F1 race. There's been steady momentum and typically in the last few weeks closer to the race, you'd expect to see a lot more pick up," he added.
