Singapore Democrats

At a time of expansion and growing confidence, the Singapore Democrats have elected a 14-member Central Executive Committee to lead the party into the next general elections.

At its biennial party conference held last week, cadre members came together to re-dedicate their efforts to work for the cause of reform and democracy in Singapore.

The party's top four posts remain unchanged. Mr Gandhi Ambalam retained the chairmanship and Mr Francis Yong continues to serve as the Vice-Chairman.

Dr Chee Soon Juan and Mr John Tan were re-elected as the Secretary-General and Assistant Secretary-General respectively.

A change was made in the post of Treasurer which was taken up by Mr Gerald Sng, a Marketing Manager, who contested in the 2006 elections. Deputising him is Assistant Treasurer Mr Jeffrey George, an engineer in the oil-rig industry.

After a keenly fought elections, the following six were elected into the executive body: Ms Chee Siok Chin, Ms Lilian Chia, Mr Johnny Ho, Mr Mohd Isa, Mr Jufrie Mahmood, and Mr Sylvester Lim.

This year saw a couple of “new” faces added to the line-up: Messrs Jufrie Mahmood and Sylvester Lim. Mr Jufrie, a party stalwart who was once “loaned” to the Workers' Party when the late J B Jeyaretnam was the secretary-general, returned to the SDP's leadership.

“I came back because I have confidence in the present leadership of the SDP,” the opposition veteran said, “and I think that the party is moving in the right direction. The growth in its ranks attests to this.”

The other first-timer is Mr Sylvester Lim whose quiet demeanour belies a fierce commitment to the ideals of democracy and justice.

“We are excited about what lies ahead and we are determined to work for change and for a government that genuinely cares for the people,” Mr Lim said.

Anticipating the intense work ahead, the newly elected leadership intends to co-opt two more members into its fold. They are Mr Laurence Lai and Mr Warren Eswaran. Mr Lai served in the previous CEC. Mr Eswaran, 25, is a member of the Young Democrats and has been with the party since his National Service days.

“Warren's inclusion in the CEC is a reflection of the increasing interest young Singaporeans are taking in us,” Chairman Ambalam noted. “We want to ensure that our Young Democrats are actively involved in the party's direction and development.”

The Young Democrats, the SDP's youth wing, will also shortly elect its leaders.

The new CEC has expressed its determination to continue expanding the party in numbers as well as capability to reach out to Singaporeans. It will rely on the Internet, as it has in the past, to call on Singaporeans to step forward and help spread the message of working towards a free, open and just Singapore. • seebeng - Congratulations
Congratulations, SDP. Your leadership seems to be well poised to take on the PAP.

SDP is the kind of opposition that we Singaporeans want. People want to see change. We want to end corruption, nepotism and cronyism.

Where is Ling How Dong ??

I hope Chia Li Tik can contest the next GE too. And Tan Kin Lian.

    And of course, Dr Chee.
  • tewniaseng
not only Chia, EJ Ng should contest under sdp ticket.

In the past, PAP has always accused the opposition of appearing just during elections. This time round they have more than what they bargained for.
  • BryanT - quantum - Presence where?
"In the past, PAP has always accused the opposition of appearing just during elections"

Quantum, I have to disagree if you meant to say that the SDP CEC members are "appearing" often outside the election period. Besides CSJ, Ms Chee and Mr Ambalan, I hardly recognise or have heard from the rest, online or otherwise.

I would urge the rest to at least write about what they aspire to, or on areas of society that they feel can be improved (but... with some clear suggestions of alternatives or solutions, please). They can start to pen some thoughts here in this website, as Mr Ambalan has done. It was a good effort, even if I may disagree with some of his points.

If they don't speak out (literally or online), I'm afraid their absence would be sorely felt, at least to the commoners like me. I hesitate to hypothesize whether the ruling party would miss them though.
  • BryanT - Another good candidate
I would like to propose another worthy candidate to contest the next GE - Mr Gopalan Nair.

First, he feels very strongly about the injustice to Singaporeans and the restrictions here. I quote:

"The dictator, as he controls the press writes self praise on a daily basis in it. One day the propaganda sheet will say it is the best city in the world. Next day it will say it has the best legal profession. Third day, it will say that it has the best civil servants and this self praise will go on daily like clockwork. The plan is to hoodwink Singaporeans and the rest of the world into thinking Singapore is something other than the small intolerant dictatorial island that it is."

Secondly, he is an ardent fan of CSJ.

"You are in the best position to do it. Your actions are credible and will be so. Can you not see this dictatorship bringing Singapore down steadily without any real agenda at all? Can you not see the Lee dictatorship behaving as if there was no real problem among the poor of Singapore? Lead them now. Organize a mass protest of the poor. You will have sufficient numbers for it, with this appalling state of affairs in Singapore."

Thirdly, he can make inspirational speeches to move the people into action.

"All over Tehran, the people have taken to the streets. They are crying foul at the election results giving victory to hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadenijad. They claim the elections were rigged. They are prepared to protest all over the country demanding justice, even if it means arrest, imprisonment and torture. They are Iranians and they love Iran. You Singapore islanders. Learn from the brave citizens of Tehran. Stand up to your rights. Take to the streets of Singapore and demand justice from the dictator Lee Kuan Yew. Do it if you love Singapore like the brave young Iranians who love Iran."

But at last, he has some unorthodox recommendations to us to solve our problems, eg. by emigrating.

"The easiest way to immigrate is the annual lottery, but as the name suggests, there is no guarantee that anyone will get it. The lottery opens each year around September or October (please check the dates) for about a month. The thinking behind this method of getting a Green Card (permanent residence) is to permit those from countries which do not have sufficient immigrants in the US to come here."

Sometimes I can't decide whether Mr Nair wants us to run away (emigrate) or rise up, or maybe even both at the same time.

Maybe that's why he's comfortably sitting in his office in Fremont and urging us and CSJ on, in a quasi-remote-control way. Having him here would certainly give the ruling party trembles and let us confirm what visions he has in his mind. I suggest that we have a petition to urge him to come lead us, provided he stops insulting us meanwhile.
