Prosecution witness Mohd Hassan told the court this week that all the ground forces assigned for the WB-IMF meeting in 2006 were deployed to Hong Lim Park to stop Dr Chee Soon Juan and other activists from conducting a march.

Mr Hassan, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, was testifying at the trial of Mr Gandhi Ambalam, Ms Chee Siok Chin, Dr Chee Soon Juan, Mr Tan Teck Wee, and Mr Teoh Tian Jing who are charged with attempting to participate in a procession from the Speakers' Corner on 16 Sep 06.

The trial, presided by District Judge Toh Yung Cheong, had commenced in November last year but could not finish in the time alotted and was adjourned 18-20 Feb 09.

Under cross-examination by Ms Chee DSP Hassan said that about 50 officers from various units of the Singapore Police Force were deployed to perform one goal and one goal only: To stop six activists from conducting a peaceful march.

Mr Hassan also testified that police officers had instructed to "advise" members of the public against going to Speakers' Corner to join in the "unlawful assembly".

The police operation came under the command of no less than a Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Mr Raymond Yeo, who was the one to order that Dr Chee be stopped from carrying out the procession.

That very evening while the police personnel were amassed at Hong Lim Park to guard the protesters, a murder was taking place one street away. A man was attacked by a gang of ten and stabbed repeatedly in the abdomen outside a 7-Eleven store at Central Square, Havelock Road at 1:30 am. He died shortly thereafter. (See here)

But DAC Raymond Yeo was busy plotting how to defeat six peaceful protesters who were exercising their constitutional rights at Speakers' Corner.

During the hearing, the Prosecution seemed anxious to hide the identity of DAC Yeo. Mr Hassan prevaricated at length and only revealed Mr Raymond Yeo's identity after Ms Chee Siok Chin pressed the issue:

Chee: Did you notice other police officers in the vicinity?
Hassan: Yes.
Chee: Can you tell us who they were?
Hassan: I do not know them.
Chee: Don't know or cannot recall?
Hassan: I don't know them, many of them I saw for the first time.
Chee: Did you see familiar faces i.e. those you knew?
Hassan: Yes, around were several faces which I've seen before. I can recognise by face because I have come across them. I can't say for those officers whether they knew my name.
Chee: I'm asking you the names of the few officers whom you knew, not whether they knew you.
Hassan: The uniformed officers whom I recognised and spoken to them before but I can't remember their names.
Chee: Again witness I'm asking you to name those whom you knew.
DPP: Your Honour, I believe the question has been answered.
Chee: The witness is evading the question. When I ask him for names he talks about uniformed officers whom he's spoken to which he cannot recall by name. My question is very specific.
Judge: I'll allow this question of just giving names.
Hassan: Like I said I recognise familiar faces but I cannot name them now.
Chee: Were there other officers there whom you can recognise and know them by their names?
Hassan: No.
Chee: Were you the highest ranking officer at the scene?
Hassan: No.
Chee: So there was a higher ranking officer than you at the scene?
Hassan: Yes.
Chee: Who would that be?
DPP: Relevance, Your Honour? How is this question going to aid her defence?
Judge: I'll allow this question.
Hassan: Mr Raymond Yeo, deputy assistant of commissioner of police.
Chee: It would make your testimony more credible if you were to stop evading my questions and start to answer them directly. You had earlier testified that you don't have any other names. Now you come out with one name. In light of this discovery that you had not been entirely truthful, I'm going to ask you again to name all the persons you know by name at the scene.
Hassan: Apart from Mr Raymond Yeo, let's see who else I can recall...ASP William Goh and ASP Ming Jun.

Mr Hassan was also the officer who had confronted Dr Chee at Raffles City Shopping Centre on 10 Sep 06 to stop the SDP secretary-general and other activists from distributing pamphlets about the 16-Sep march. (See here).

wow 50 policemen to contain 5 peacful protestors, a ratio of 10 to 1...wonder what the ration will be like in the cases of thieves, robbers, and murderers.

I feel very safe now knowing that I can be protected from the truth by the Kangaroo police force, even if it means that I may lose my life getting knifed while doing a spot of shopping.

Best inefficient police in the whole wide world. What the hell do these baby-faced police know? No experience whatsoever. Go to europe and take part in a mass protest and they will piss in their pants.

"50 police officers to stop 6 activists, etc." is probably yet another example of the habitual phobic overreaction of civil servants, the controlled press, etc., towards stifling the minutest thing perceived to be displeasing to their masters.

Part of the "fear" LKY instils, in order to be "significant"?

    Yes!

Singaporeans should use this type of questions about how old fox Lee Kuan Yew and his DAUGHTER-IN-LAW (yea, very much related and promoted bec. of relationship or else how such a loser can get such a hihg job...now resigned) lose Sin $300 billion?
  • seebeng - What's wrong with peaceful march?
If Dr Chee and his supporters through their political activities are not making any impact on the people, why bother to deploy 50 police headed by a deputy assistant commissioner to stop a peaceful march?

Does it not show the fear of the dictatorial PAP that only depends on its mafia police, the controlled press, the kangaroo judiciary, the rubber stamp parliament, etc for its grip on power?

looking at how many policemen were deployed to surround 6 unarmed peaceful protesters, the 6 unarmed peaceful protesters seem to be more dangerous than MSK, the terrorist who wasn't escorted to the toilet that lead to his escape from the highly secured Whitley Road ISD detention center.

we were also told by MHA, that recording of illegal protest and putting up on the net is similar to terrorist putting up their video on the net promoting terrorism...

so in SG, speaking up against the government is deem to be as dangerous (if not more) as terrorism..

    ah..UNIQUELY SG

    Dear All,

Have been absent from the coversation due to hectic works.

Wanted to say it out the PAP is overpaid and underworked from its duties compared to other parts of the world. They are too small in their hearts. Instead of using its resources to protect its citizens and tax payers; it has misused its power to surpress its own citizens.

It has also a large pool of civil servants who are just useless; no military experienced BGs and Commanders; no real time battle fields exposures; we called them "ah kua" commanders. Remembered an article that commented by the sergeants in US marines refused to greet our Sissy loong during one of the military visits to the US years back; as a non-battled BG commands no respects in the real world. Same as our police officers who instead guarding its citizens' interests; have been using forces to surpess it's harmless protestors such as the SDP team.

It's been a laughing stock when the world knows about it; how on earth our 6-time highly paid (of Obama) prime minister is doing...???

How insecured are all these useless dogs.

Singapore needs a change in it's leaders; we cannot lose another S$100 Billions anymore. Our pockets are not so deep as compared to madam Ho Jinx.

I would like to bring Dirty Harry and Nathan to international court, to investigate the role he played in World War 2 as a traitor to Singapore and the countless freedom fighter he help send to their death.

The only problem i saw with Dr Chee is that he is too very outspoken. He speaks the truth and damn the consequence. He speaks whats happening around us, truth, nothing but the damming truth.

He speaks issues none of us dare to even mention in our blogs, issues the 'approved' oppositions chose to side-step and fail to address.

And because of his truth-seeking inclination, because of his simple-honest and outspoken nature, he is very very articulate in his views and reasonings.

An open-and-honest man makes a very good reporter and writer. For that you get the prize Dr Chee.

Read his books and you will know what i mean.

    To Jaslyn,
It is almost a year since Mas Selamat escape. What is the police doing, what is Wong Cunt Seng doing, lousy police can only bully harmless peaceful protestors, but they can not even handle one dangerous, limping terrorist. This stupid ICA officer always ask my name when I cross JB at the check point. After he opened my car boot, he will give me one slip of paper stating how many passengers in the car, very stupid idea, because they worry one will disappear like Mas selamat. And the lane will jam like hell when we come back from JB. This stupid govt should learn from Malaysia custom. They always say they are number one,but I say they are chicken

Awesome Words

If the legal channel of change in a democracy are open in theory but closed or unfairly obstructed in practice, then the system is not democratic in the way needed to make civil disobedience unnecessary.
