Singapore Democrats

CNN reported today that Merrill Lynch paid a total of $121 million (amounts in USD unless otherwise stated) to its top four bonus recipients in 2008 just before it went out of business. The next top for bonus recipients received $62 million, and the next top six bonus packages totalled $66 million. In other words, 14 people in the US were given nearly $250 million.

The list goes on: nearly 700 of the company's top executives (out of a total of 39,000 employees) walked away with at least $1 million each in bonuses bringing the grand total  paid out to a cool $3.6 billion.

These benefits were dished out last December, just days before the bank announced that it had made a $15-billion loss in the 4th quarter ($27 billion for the year). A few days later, the company was sold to Bank of America.

The Merrill saga would make for fascinating reading if not for the fact that we Singaporeans were the ones paying for this scam.

And who was behind the fiasco? In December 2007, Temasek Holdings bought into Merrill Lynch and paid $4.4 billion for a 9.4 percent stake, making it the biggest shareholder even though the bank was already losing money then. By July 2008, Merrill reported another two quarters of losses and announced that it needed more capital – $8.5 billion to be exact.

Normally this would have been seen as a warning signal that something was amiss. But the bright sparks at Temasek, chief among them Ms Ho Ching, unbelievably chose to up its stake to 14 percent in the flailing and failing bank. Temasek did this because it believed that Merrill had a "great franchise". It even announced that it had "great confidence" in the bank's CEO John Thain, who was fired from BoA earlier this year for not disclosing Merrill's losses.

But you wouldn't know about the tumult by looking at Temasek's website because it carries no news about Merrill. The website does say, however, that Temasek is "built on professionalism and robust processes".

All that professionalism and robustness under Ms Ho's leadership led the group to declare a 31 percent loss last year in its portfolio of S$185 billion – and that was just between March and November. Temasek has invested 40 percent of its budget in financial services. Put together, we are probably staring at an even greater loss.

The S$58-billion loss incurred by Temasek works out to, based on 3 million citizens, S$20,000 per Singaporean. If this money had been returned to the people instead of lining the already bulging pockets of the fat cats in Wall Street, each Singaporean household would have an average of S$80,000 to fall back on in these hardest of times.

As it was, Mr John Thain spent $1.2 million of company money to renovate his office and we ended up helping to pay for, among other things, a $35,000 toilet-bowl and a $1,400 wastebasket.

The scary bit about all this is that the GIC has yet to announce its losses.

In the meantime, the Government tells Singaporeans to further tighten their belts. Wonderful advice for the thousands who stand in line everyday for free food.

  • exSINgaPOORean - TAK BOLEH TAHAN!!!!!!!!!!!!
The is the straw that breaks the camel's back. Tak Boleh Tahan should be applied to the Temasek Holdings and GIC...not just on the cost of living.

Yes. Just imagine $80,000 to $100,000 from each Singaporean family to help the Ang Mo to buy toilet-bowls.

Did Hole Jinx have a kick back from investing the money? We must ask tough questions to this corrupted famiLEE. Go ahead to sue all the 3 million Singaporeans who want Hole Jinx and Corrupt fool LEE KUAN YEW.

Corrupt LKY could be using a diamond toilet-bow at his home that is why his daughter's rectum raptured recently...sitting too long on a diamond toilet-bowl. He is the maker or CEO Durrel of Kidney Foundation.

If Singaporeans still can tahan this type of nonsense and do not hold rallies like the Hong Kongers, Lee C#@T Yew will puch you over for good, PERIOD.

Wear T-Shirts with the words: "PAP we want our $2k/citizen back!"

If you owe just $200 to the HDB or the Town Council, they will send legal letters to you and subsequently cut your water, electric supply and you go to jail. Now corruped Lee Kuan Yew and the prostitue Hole Jinx lost total of almost Sin $500 billion..twice Singapore GDP and Singaporeans still continue to be scolded by old man and Dr Chee and comrades arrested by them.

Even a dog cannot stand this type of injustice and corruption...unless Singaporeans are not worth being dogs.

10,000 people should gather in the wanyang Speakers' Corner and match along the Shenton Way then to the Istana to demand for accountablity of pimp Lee and pros Hole.

And yet LKY and his cabinet of careerists are prepared to bitch over an extra $30 to the poor.

One of the "yes ministers" Vivian Bala questioned whether the poor wanted to have their meals at kopitiam, restaurant or coffee house. What a condescending and outright insult to the people by the multi-million-dollar "salaried" leeches led by LKY and his stooges.

  • Dick
Dirty Harry is a paid consultant for Citibank. while he is holding key appointment in Temasick, violate the rule on conflict of interest.

Did his appointment in Citibank, influence the investment decision for Temasick to buy into Citibank's share?

Without transparency, how can we demand Dirty Harry to come clean?
  • VP - Singaporean Shareholders
Singaporean are real shareholders of Temasek.

Vote the party out who gambled our MONEY away and make too many BIG mistakes.
  • AlexNg
    Vote? hahahaha
  • Low Fuk Loong - Keep fattening the reserves only bring hardship to
if a small country keeps fattening its reserves best known to the leaders, the native citizens will suffer.

do singapore really needs such a colossal reserves??

no wonder HDB price keeps rising, TV license fee refuses to disappear, COE, ERP, high cigarettes duty under the pretext of deterrence, high PUB bills, expensive healthcare, etc.

when local peasants cannot contribute more to the taxes, influx of rich foreigners are welcome to be citizens to fill up the gap on the premise of low birth rate.

this recession may be good to know more about the reserves.

If temasick loses 31%, what about GIC? 41% ?

how are the reserves connected to these two investment arms ?

Are the reserves audited and checked by Nathan ?

there are many questions left unanswered, and sadly, local peasants really have no voice on this kind of issue .

can we imagine if Dr Chee is inside the parliament, change will come !
  • maxchew - Gung-Ho Jinx seldom goes out now!
With the news of her loss of billions of our money going right down to the general population, her life is surely in danger (burning of SHT really frightens these VIP Govt elites)
I won't be surprised she is now as well-protected as her husband or LKY when out in public places. In fact someone told me he saw her in Centre-point shopping with 2 female and 2 male body-guards just last month.
With SHT's burning incident fresh in their minds, our vulnerable Govt VIPs will prefer to stay home and let others shop for them....hence the title.

Awesome Words

If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning.
