And the night shall be filled with music, And the cares that infest the day Shall fold their tents like the Arabs And as silently steal away.
Come 31 Dec, we're going to turn Hong Lim Park into Singers' Corner and sing like we've never sung before. We're going to sing to the memory of JBJ, we're going to sing about freedom and democracy, and we're going to sing to the New Year.
So if you play the guitar, or any other musical instrument for that matter, we need you. If we're all going to sing our hearts out and fill the night with music, the accompaniment will have to be robust. If you think you can help out with an instrument, please email us at

and we'll get in touch with you for practice.
For the rest of you, bring along your voices to Hong Lim Park and let's make a lot of noise to usher in 2009. Music, it is said, expresses that which cannot be spoken and on which it is impossible to be silent.
There many things that cannot be spoken in Singapore but many of us refuse to be silent. Next Wednesday evening would be the perfect way to speak out through song. From uplifting numbers like Josh Groban's You Raise Me Up to the more reflective Imagine by John Lennon to the old favourite Auld Lang Syne, we'll sing for freedom.
So make a date with the Singapore Democrats and Friends of SDP on New Year's Eve. Bring your family and friends, not forgetting a mat or two to sit on. It'll be a great evening of fun, food and camaraderie. We'll start at 6 pm and go all the way till past midnight for the countdown to New Year's Day.

Was JBJ ever a SDP member ??
WP should be the party organizing the gathering in JBJ's name.
Pls stop exploiting the good name of JBJ for your own selfish narrow interests.
I am getting more and more disgusted with SDP as the days go by.

Hi jacys, so why isn't WP organizing any such gathering?
And why was JBJ working or at least meeting more with SDP and not WP at all over the past years?

Please answer Seelan's questions. I had the same questions until I read his comments.
In the meantime, I prefer to believe that your 'disgust' of the SDP is directly proportional to the SDP's moral and intellectual stature, which also happens to expose the WP's spectacular uselessness to Singapore despite its two seats in Parliament

jacys - WP is not a media slut like SDP
Hi Seelan,
WP is not an attention-seeking media slut like SDP. We prefer to keep low profile and do our ground work at the grassroots level.
That explains why Mr Low Thia Kiang has won 4 consecutive elections against the PAP while Chee has been thrashed repeatedly again and again.
Why should WP organize such a gathering when we have already held a night vigil for JBJ ?
What is the significance of 31st Dec 2008 ? What has it got to do with JBJ ?
This is PURE exploitation of JBJ's name for SDP's political motives.

Hi jacys,
I don't want to tell you what I think of Low winning 4 elections here on the SDP website because I'd rather leave inter-party issues/different out of it and convince people to vote for the opposition in unity. Unless you think voting for the PAP is alright, then I really have nothing to discuss with you.
You/WP already held a night vigil for JBJ? Are you referring to the one organized by TOC, and if so, why do you refer to it as your/WP's vigil? I don't suppose Andrew Loh would be very happy with that sort of labeling.
JBJ's birthday is on the 5th of January, so the last day of the year was chosen for this event to sing a final serenade and offer words of praise to the man who has in fact been working and meeting with SDP for the past few years. I have personally sat in one of those dinner meetings so I can attest to it.
Speaking of which, you haven't replied to my question: And why was JBJ working or at least meeting more with SDP and not WP at all over the past years?

jacys - Since when did JBJ "work" with SDP ?
Hi Seelan,
As we all know, JBJ had a fallout with Mr Low after he left WP. It will be awkward for JBJ if he continued to attend WP's events and meetings.
Who knows if it's not SDP who has been begging JBJ to attend their events ?
The crux is: JBJ has NEVER openly ENDORSED SDP or Dr Chee. Neither did attack WP or pledge support to SDP's methods. All he does is to express solidarity with SDP, that's all. That shld not be misconstrued as allegiance.
I urge all SDP supporters to visit this blog set up by a WP member:
http://www.notmysdp.blogspot.com/
Please stop being deceived by SDP's propaganda ! Don't waste time with them !
Join WP if you are really keen to make a difference.
BTW: don't you know that Andrew Loh was an active WP member in the past ?

Let's parse what passes for your "crux" of the matter:
Re: "JBJ has NEVER openly ENDORSED SDP or Dr Chee."
Yet, he never shied away from associating with the SDP or its members and very publicly.
Re: "Neither did [he] attack WP or pledge support to SDP's methods."
What would you have said if JBJ HAD attacked the WP: that he had a personal axe to grind, and that he is a sore loser? I credit JBJ's professionalism, and not an imagined non-wrongdoing on the WP's part, for his silence.
And JBJ had publicly endorsed the SDP's civil disobedience by declaring that the RP might take a similar route. Would't you call that an endorsement of the SDP's methods, or you really as unschooleds as all that to make that logical conclusion?
Re: "All he does is to express solidarity with SDP, that's all. That shld not be misconstrued as allegiance."
Then tell us what the endorsement of the SDP's methods should be construed as.
It is YOU who are using JBJ's memory in vain. Knowing how pupoular he is/was, you are attempting to paint a wide gulf between the character of JBJ and that of the SDP so that people see them as distictly different.
The last day of 2008 is a damn appropriate day for us to say a final and reluctant goodbye to a man who is difficult to say goodbye to. The SDP is just acknowledging that fact.

If you really want to do something constructive, like you said, then you should wasting your time here. You don't sound like you're actually doing anything constructive. You are arguing all the time. Just disappear.

jacys - To tan
What right do you have to ask me to "disappear" ? Just because you cannot defeat me in a proper debate ?
Are SDP supporters all like that ? Demand that they be given the freedom of speech but deny others from criticizing them ?
So what constructive things SDP supporters have done till now other than whining like homeless dogs ?
And SDP ? Organizing a wayang vigil in memory of a dead man for a few beggars like you is very very "constructive" indeed.
HAHAHAHA !

You come across as someone desperate to change SDP, or perhaps prove us all wrong. And you have not achieved that goal or won any debates yet, not with the way you whine and stomp the floor. Like I said, you are not constructive as you claimed to be.As for me, I'm not constructive or productive; I'm just a nobody. Don't mind me and my comments, I'll just distract you from your all important constructive work. Just be cool.

Seelan Palay - re: Since when did JBJ "work" with SDP ?
BTW: don't you know that Andrew Loh was an active WP member in the past ?
Of course I know that he was, but he quit some time ago and I'd like you to ask him personally what he thinks of WP now. I'm sure his opinions will of great interest to you.
So are you trying to say that the vigil TOC organised equates to an WP event? If you are saying that without any backing or affirmation from Andrew Loh or anyone else from TOC it might seem that it is in fact you who is making use of TOC's effort to claim credit for yourself/WP.
And with regards to your reply to tan, I don't know how calling people "beggars" is any form of "proper" debate.
