Car tax prices in Singapore, one of the world's most costly places to buy vehicles have plunged to a record low of just two dollars for small cars, from over S$10,000 last month, as demand stalled.

The Certificates of Entitlement (COE), which allow Singaporeans to own a car, also slid 59 percent to S$4,889 for bigger cars in an auction on Wednesday, transport regulator the Land Transport Authority said on its website.

Small cars are classified as below 1600 cc.

"You are not sure you will have a job," said Song Seng Wun, an economist at Malaysian bank CIMB in Singapore. "There is less incentive to buy a new car."

Dealers said they expected car prices to fall sharply which could trigger renewed demand. "We will be expecting more business -- especially within the next few weeks," said Didi Farali.

Singapore fell into a recession in the third quarter, the first in Asia, hit by the global financial crisis, leading to layoffs at the country's top bank DBS and slashed corporate earnings.

Any surge in demand is likely to drive COE prices up, since the price depends on bidding in the twice-monthly auctions. The COE price jumped to over S$20,000 in 2005 when the city-state's export-driven economy began to boom.

this reminds me of a shop where you buy expensive one day, then next day everything cheap. it sort of tells customers thank you for being stupid and paying so much all this time.

so if they drop all this taxes, was it necessary in the first place? on one hand, people are being told to tighten up their belts, then on the other hand government is trying to get you to buy a car??? no way, not me, i'm not going to fall for it. new cars can wait.

Yes, the COE may go down but the ERP has more to come to counter the balance for revenue...

The high cost of living, in a big way, is cause by the PAP govt.

Without doubt, besides the sky high import tax, the COEs is actually additional cost to be incurred by the consumers - in reality a double taxation on a similiar item, never mind the auction style of bidding for it. Considering that the COE did go for at $30,000 - $40,000 at one time.

The other item large item ticket for the consumers is the HDB flats. It started real honest enough in the 1960s with the real honest motive of easing people's burden on cost of living.

The HDB flats are now "subsidise to market". However you want to interprete it, these flats are sold at way above cost, maybe as much as 50% - 100%. Curiously, HDB flats are for those not well-to-do strata of society who cannot afford private property. Therefore, any percentage increase in HDB prices is an increase in cost of living. Go figure. Think about the large bank loans you have to service over the next 20 - 25 years.

Then there are the other items like ERP, GST, Radio & TV licenses, etc. We even have to pay more if we fly out of S'pore i.e. using S'pore as a departure point. All put together is one big chunk of extra cost one has to shoulder.

The PAP govt is not telling the whole truth when they claim global factors attributing to high cost of living in S'pore.

I've always advocated:

1(a) the delinking by car distributors/resellers of bids 'on behalf of'
- more like, 'at a disservice to and disadvantage of of' -
car buyers and car sale prices, AND

1(b) for separate bidding by car buyers who should all unite
- possible in sand-loose Singaporeans' mindsets??? -
and each bid the MINIMUM of $1 - then let's go to a lucky draw to prevent outbidding/killing off one another especially by rich bastards who can afford to put in a $1 million-bid knowing the certainty of getting a COE without having to pay for what he has offered as bid

IT'S AN OPEN SECRET CURRENT SYSTEM IS LTA-MANAGED AND COLLUDED BY DISTRIBUTORS/MAJORS WHOSE BUSINESS OWNERS ARE BRIEFED PRE-TENDER ABOUT WHAT TO BID, HOW MUCH TO BID, DURING EACH TENDER
- FOR HOW ELSE DO YOU EXPLAIN WHY COEs SHOULDN'T BE SUCCESSFULLY BIDDED FOR THE VERY MINIMAL OF $1 - EVERY CAR BUYER WOULD WANT THAT, NO? - AT EACH AND EVERY TENDER???

THIS COE BIDDING COLLUSION THING HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR FAR, FAR TOO LONG - SOMEBODY'S HEAD/SOME HEADS MUST FALL - NOT JUST ROLL - TO THE GROUND VIA GUILLOTINE, JUST AS THE HEADS OF THE DESIGNERS OF THE FEW FEW DECADES' HDB FLATS WITHOUT ELEVATORS ON EVERY LEVEL CAUSING MUCH ANGST AND PHYSICAL PAINS TO RESIDENTS WHO THEN LATER HAVE TO AGREE TO 'UPGRADING' AND PAY OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS!!!

OR

2. Pay-As-You-Bid - much fairer, prevents 1(b) from always ocurring.

Unite, my compatriots, fight the injustices in our lives!

Be realist, don't expect PAP to be different.

Wisey Mikey ;)

Expect PAP to change??? Sure, you can - change your mindsets first, Sillyporeans.

They can only change AFTER THERE'S BEEN A CHANE OF POWER!

For examples, see:
(1) LDP - Liberal Democratic Party - 自由民主党〔略:自民党〕
(2) KMT - Kuomintang - 中国国民党

〔日本語〕“天皇陛下 万歳!”
"Tennou-heika, BANZAI!"

〔台湾語〕“李光耀全家 放屎 吃屎!”
"Lee Kong Yaw juan kay, PANG SAI! JIAK SAI!"

Had a stupid dream last night:
Loong, after consulting the family astrologers in Taiwan (Song Liuli) and Thailand (Bailong Wang or White Dragon King), pulled a surprise and called a sanp elction.
And again, PAP won - worse, no more Hougang Tiochiu Lowly Bastard & out went too old Mr Chiam (finally)!!!
Why? Singaporeans went back into their old predictable mindsets, got cold feet after being scared into believing that only PAPpies can rescue them from economic gloom-slaught!

SIGHS

Even in dreams - or rather, NIGHTMARES. So sad the state of affairs here...

UK has a Sebastian COE, but this COE is different.

Together with his great rival Steve Ovett, he brought honor to Her Majesty's United Kingdom, breaking record after world record in the 800m and 1500m in the late 70s through early 80s.

Even went to Moscow 80, beat all performance drug-enhanced Soviet Bloc athletes to win a gold for Britain - in defiance of the West's boycott that Olympic year!

Still continues to contribute to Queen and country as national Olympic chief - London's successful bid for 2012 can be said to be all due to this remarkable athlete, giant of a man, in his small ways.

Singapore's COEs? Yes, sure, bring something to country (read govt, as good as PAP coffers) - all your hardearned money!

COE London vs COE Singapore - a tale of two cities.
