Midstream through what would have continued to be a comfortable life, he changed course in search for fuller meaning and fulfilment in life, for fellow Singaporeans, and therefore too, for himself.

In the final reckoning, what really counts other than "the quality of life"?

Another, whom civilisations have hailed as God Incarnate, said "He who saves his life will lose it; he who is prepared to lose it will find it". Again, "Broad is the way that leads to destruction, while narrow is the way that leads to life, which only few will find". Then, also,in the last judgement, "the first shall be the last, the last shall be the first".

God bless his soul.
• God bless us all - God protect us all

• AnnA - A Big Loss For Us
My condolences to the family and friends of the late Mr J B Jeyaratnam. He had spent his lifetime committed in fighting for fellow Singaporean to bring about justice to all of us against LKY until his last day.

To all his friends, please be strong.

Thank you SDP, for the news. You have shown the people that you are not bias.
• elitocracy - Where is his wake?
So anyone knows where is his wake held?
• Admirable person - Honourable man
He did not steal!

He did not cheat -like ex-NKF members/staff

He fought for Sinkaporeans against Papees' rubbish laws all his life!
• Sheila Amar Anant Herrick - A great man has passed
I feel gladdened knowing that he achieved great things for Singaporean politics as well as left the scene a winner for having returned to law and political activism. He was working on causes for real change to the parliamentary system - on Oct 15 his case was to be heard in the high court in regards to bi-elections for the parliamentary seat left vacant since the passing of the minister from Jurong GRC.
True to the end, he was working to rehabilitate the system.
His inspiring words at the launch of the Reform Party this past June were "Walk with me, I may not have long to walk."
A great man no longer walks with us.
Should we not forget his legacy as well as the wheels he has set in motion.
Deepest condolences to his family and the people of Singapore.
• CST - to Admirable person
Yes, kudos to JBJ. At least JBJ won an election fairly to become an MP and fought for the rights of all Singaporeans. He cleared his bankruptcy unlike CSJ and gang. He did not go go around the world to criticise Singapore.

Empty vessels and empty mouth pieces pls step one side. Start to give excuses when cannot even get elected by the people of Singapore.
• Chew - A Hero Passed On...
JBJ, a hero till the end...

JBJ, his legend lives forever...

JBJ, an honorable man, no less...

JBJ, the echelon of righteous and embodiment of what make Singaporeans human...

JBJ, Joshua Benjamin Jeyaretnam, may had pass on into the next world, but his spirit, his words, his deeds and his greatness shall lives forever!

Rest in peace, my hero.
• Sinister Minister
As I have said before rings even louder now.
Your freedoms and rights will not come when LKY dies, it will come when you help others who fight for you live!

I was sad to hear the news of his death, we have lost a good honourable man who has sacrificed himself without ever wanting to enrich himself or his family. The sadness turned to anger when I read the ST online article. This is what it had to say about a man who has just died.
He was unable to contest the 2006 general election after he was made bankrupt in 2001 for failing to pay $265,000 in defamation damages to then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.

"He was unable to contest the 2006 general election after he was made bankrupt in 2001 for failing to pay $265,000 in defamation damages to then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong"
After losing his parliamentary seat in 1986 for making a false declaration of the WP accounts and being jailed for a month and fined $5,000, he spent most of the last two decades battling outside the legislature"
That brought him back into the House as a Non-Constituency MP, a brief tenure that ended in 2001, when he was declared a bankrupt for failing to pay after losing a defamation suit against five Indian PAP MPs, among others.
When he left his 30-year-long WP vehicle in that same year, after accusing his successor Low of not helping him clear his debts, he was effectively banished to the margins of the opposition scene here.
Yet, the old warhorse refuses to believe that he is irrelevant to Singaporean"

That's the eulogy by our MSM. I hope they all rot in hell when their time comes, starting with the old man who must smiling now.

May you rest in peace.

Farewell. Words cannot express the sorrow of your passing. The years you have fought for Singapore, for us.

Fare thee well. My good Sir.
• ahsayman - R.I.P Dear JBJ Sir!
In the deepest grief, few are the words needed to convey it.
• Nick
R.I.P. J B Jeyaretnam.
You left behind a legacy which will never be forgotten.

Many admired your courage to say what was on your mind and in your heart.
I was one of them.

You left an undeniable mark of the human spirit on this tiny island, and to remember that would always bring a smile to anyones face in the darkest of hours.
• anon - heartache
My heart ached when I heard the news. Your courage, your steadfastness, and your gift to Singaporeans will always be in my heart and in my mind.
• Seelan Palay
He was the first fighter I met. And he fought to the end.
• John - God bless his soul
He lived a life that is full. He fought all his life not for his own glory, but for all of us. I am sure he is now home to be with God.
• Clear eyed - A Voice for Singaporeans
He was a giant taking on a well-oiled and well-heeled machinery to speak up for the voiceless and the disempowered, and paying terribly for it. And though freedom, democracy, justice and equality are still not here yet, Singaporeans owe him a debt of gratitude for showing us the way to achieve them. I mourn his loss. He will always remain my inspiration on how to live honourably and courageously in a country ruled by fear.

I thought that after all these years, I have been through enough adversaries and heard enough bad news until I am too numb to react to any more bad news. But when I received the news of his death, my heart sinks totally and it's still bleeding badly. I wanted to say "JBJ, rest in peace" but my mind is not at peace now as we have lost aman so well respected by all the oppositions.....
• Law Sin Ling
Allow me to take my hat off to a great politician who has passed away with his pride held high. He deserves all the accolades that go his way.

In his heyday, none of our current crop of government leaders is a fraction of a worthy match for his reverberating convictions. He has more principles and focus than the entire 82 PAP Members of Parliament combined, including one octogenarian who will not have the pleasure of seeing Mr. Jeyaretnam crawl on his bended knees to ask for mercy.

Mr. Jeyaretnam had shown iron-grit determination and courage even at the nadir of his existence. This great man did not need mercy, and will not ask for one. The never-say-die spirit he embodied will live on amongst the courageous. It is a gift which all Singaporeans, especially the members of the Opposition, should emulate in their long and laborious quest towards winning a lasting and substantial change for this country.

The esteemed gentleman is a legend, and his moral legacy will outlast that of undeserved pretenders. I pay my earnest respect to one of Singapore’s last true heroes.

“Veteran opposition politician, Mr J.B. Jeyaretam, died of heart failure early on Tuesday morning. He was 82.

The pugnacious former head of the Workers’ Party, who recently formed the Reform Party, died at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, said his close friend and chairman of Mr Jeyaretnam’s new political party.

He leaves behind two sons, Kenneth and Philip.

He was the first opposition member to break the ruling People’s action Party’s grip on parliament 27 years ago.

He was unable to contest the 2006 general election after he was made bankrupt in 2001 for failing to pay $265,000 in defamation damages to then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.

He was discharged from bankruptcy in May last year.

Mr Jeyaretnam made his final political comeback earlier this year.

He left the Workers’ Party after years at its helm and was succeeded by Mr Low Thia Khiang, who is now MP for Hougang.

When he broke the PAP’s 15-year monopoly of the Parliament in 1981, most of today’s young Singaporeans were not even born yet.

After losing his parliamentary seat in 1986 for making a false declaration of the WP accounts and being jailed for a month and fined $5,000, he spent most of the last two decades battling outside the legislature.

Of the five General Elections since then, he has contested only once, in 1997.

He finished as top loser through the bruising Cheng San GRC bout, earning a 45.2 per cent of the valid votes.

Yet, the old warhorse refuses to believe that he is irrelevant to Singaporeans.”

From bitch of ShittyTimes
“http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_284282.html”

========================================
I can’t farting believe it that a great man continue to be discredited and disrespected even after he died. A ShittyTimes that can’t even have compassionate and gracious, and look towards the goodness and contribution of a great opp party leader when it come to reporting of a great man of Singapore just because he is from opp party camp.

This is no way to disrespect a great man through negative reporting.
Now did anyone note that ShittyTimes can’t even dare print the name of the editor ?

Even in JB’s death, LKY still wouldn’t let JB die piecefully ? Retribution will come to LKY when he pass away. I’m sure we can do better than ShittyTimes when it comes to reporting on LKY’s final moment.
• Observer - Sad
It is really sad to see an opposition member who fought so hard for the right of Singaporean to pass away suddenly. I hope the PAP will at least pay their respect by reporting good and powerful things he has done during his time.

I seriously hope that it is as well a reminder for LKY that his time will come just as well. I hope he remorses on his own actions against so many opposition members before it is too late.
• mourner

• God Save Singapore
Happy must be God to call back to his fold such a great and rare soul as JBJ! And we weep at our mortal loss of...

A politician who cared for the common man at the expense of his own personal comfort.

One who sacrificed a lucrative civil service career to champion the cause of trampled Singaporeans.

One who weathered financial calamity and politicial tyranny and inspired others with hope for a free and truly democratic Singapore.

How many politicians in the Singapore Parliament would dare to walk in his shoes? NONE FOR MONEY IS THEIR GOD!

His life and legacy is UNFORGETTABLE.

As a young Singaporean, I will endeavour to teach my future children and grandchildren about this great man. History books and media may not tell but I will.

I am saddened by the passing of JBJ. He fought a good fight for democracy in Singapore. A real hero! He did not crawl on his kness to LKY to beg for mercy and he won! A man of character who paid dearly for what he believes in! My condolences to Kenneth and Philip.
• HK - Now LKY can go, he has won!
JB a true and patriotic son of Singapore.

I will go to your wake to pay my respect. To show my appreciation to you. Once many years ago, I gave a lift to you when I saw you waiting for a cab. You asked me to find out more about the WP and engage with it. I told you that I was scared. You kept quiet thereafter and I knew I had disappointed you. At your wake, I will say sorry to you.

Now, I hope LKY feels that he has outlast everyone of his generation; and he has WON and he can now go!

Let him body & unconscious part of him, give up and go.

I will certainly go to LKY's wake. Not to pay respect to him BUT to make sure that he is really DEAD! I will curse him silently. I have no guts to say it loudly because you know how vindictive his dogs are!
• Dunlop - Lion of a man
JBJ, your name will remain in the annals of history, as a courageous and resolute man who fought for democracy in Singapore. We salute you.
• Rajah
I am very sad to hear the demise of a great man who is affectionately known as JBJ.

In fact, JBJ can be rightfully called the Father of Opposition politics as he paved the way for opposition members in Parliament. He also broke the dominance of the one-party rule which had become arrogant and out of tune of the common people. JBJ represented the common people and became the voice of the people and encouraged people to stand up for their rights as we are a democratic island state.

His grit, determination and courage to withstand all the obstacles and traps laid by the PAP by means of defamation suits and legal technicalities are truly remarkable. We can draw great lessons such as humility in politics and personal sacrifices for his beliefs from JBJ.

Thank you very much JBJ for your efforts and sacrifices you had made for us right up till the very end. You will never be forgotten and always be remembered for your contributions and sacrifices for the common people.

My sincere and deepest condolences to all the family members. JBJ is truly a wonderful and remarkable person. His place in Singapore’s history is indisputable. All of you can take pride of.

• Disappointed_Citizen - A Darked Day To Singaporeans
Hi All,

A brave and tireless man for democracy has left us, to the home of God who we are sure will protect and guide him to another world.

Wished to show my condolences to his two bright sons who have been supporting his political-torn hero, who speaks for his people and challenge the "tyranic PAP" bullies. The ruling party has not changed our lives to the better but takes, sucks, taxed our hard earned monies; lost millions to the "Tamasekiii" led investment overseas. The financial turmoil recently in the States and world wide has unvealed this wrong deceisions made by this comogorate. It's our hard earned $$$, my dear fellow countrymen.

The loss of this great man who we supported every of your rallies during the election is a big blow to the freedom of Singapore. However, you will be remembered by us deep in the heart as a man of courage and rare to fight for every common citizen rights.

You will rest in peace as more educated and professional Singaporeans have heard you, have learned from you and the future young fighters will carry your works to make Singapore a fair judical place, to stay at least.

Be home, be with the Lord.

Rest in peace and you are always well remembered, by your sons and daughters of all Singaporeans.

Remember today is the day we must be united and uphold the true democracy without hypocrisy.
• g_e - Godspeed, JBJ.
There once was a man who declared with overweening pride that he would sooner be feared than loved for otherwise he would be 'nothing'.

Then again there once was a man of unflinching principle who took every unkind blow and stood with head held high, bloody but unbowed.

I know whose hand I would sooner take. I know who commands respect the most. I know which of these gentlemen counts for 'nothing', don't you?

Well done, Mr. J.B.Jeyaratnam, sir. You showed Singaporeans how to lead a life of great honour despite the most overwhelming odds.

So dear readers, do you see another brave, lonely figure standing tall and delivering his message unafraid of the jackals snarling at his feet? Do pause and reflect upon his courage, step forward and shake his hand lest one day you regret never having done so.

• God Save Singapore - God has made known His verdict.

HE SHALL NOT DIE IN VAIN.

I am proud to have walked up to him during one of his many book sales and shook his hands.

RIP, JBJ!
Heaven is so fair. LKY for all his good managed to live till 85 now, while evil fighter JBJ has to pass on at 82.

May JBJ's soul be tormented in 18th level hell and in his afterlife.

JBJ is 82 and died, but LKY is 85 and alive.

God has made known to us that the real good man is LKY.

• LIM TUNG HEE - A Hero Lives Forever
My heart is grief-stricken this very minute I learnt of the death of my hero.I may be thousand of miles away from where his dead body lies but my many meetings with this truly great Opposition warrior flash vividly in my memories...and I know they will be with me forever and many others who know this hero.
I could recall the many occasions seeing him selling books at MRT stations
just to pay off his bankruptcy so that he could make a comeback in politics. His countless years of heartbreaking deprivation to bring about change in Singapore politics could be felt even by the most indifferent voters. His adversaries have all paled in comparison if not in shame.
JB Jeyaretnam or JBJ will always live in our hearts as an icon of Opposition Courage,Integrity and Persistence.
He is a legend...because a hero lives forever....

He who wrote the above bears the dark aura of the PAP and stupidity. Do you not know that the universal saying is that the Good die Young? If age must come into play, the Older Fool's 85 years of sins shall form a bible worthy of Satan's eyes.

JBJ is a brave man who fought without wanting anything material in return. He does not venture into a task with monetary gains in mind; he does not draw distinctive lines between the different systems in Singapore, and does not utter nonsense such as calling his people "digits".

Pray tell, what other man is able to stand tall to fight for freedom not just for himself, his sons, but for the good of all the tamed sheep in SG? Bankruptcy failed to break him, adversaries failed to slaughter him.. he only gave up because his heart decided he needs a good long rest after all these hard work...

Leaving behind a legacy for Singaporeans who are enlightened and do not succumb to the carrot-dangling antics employed by a certain Family who knows this is the ONLY way to gain support.

Its up to us to finish up from where the Great and Noble JBJ left off. His spirit shall guide us through like a shining star, no matter where he is. RIP.

JBJ,we singaporeans miss you.Its a very sad day.
• Another Freedom Fighter - LKY having a party?
JBJ was an outstanding fighter. His death is a great loss to us.
• Bernard Chan - Futher Restrictions.
"Come, walk with me, let us walk together... for peace, justice, truth... fearing no one except God," he (Mr Jayaretnam) urged the gathering.

I would not be surprised that in future the PAP would ban all politicians in Singapore from using the words with religious overtone bec. it seems late Jayaretnam and Dr Chee (whom I believe respect Mr Jayaretnam very deeply as a friend) have been saying almost the same: "fear only GOD" which is very biblical. None in Singapore will then "fear" the god Lee Kuan Yew(with little "g")...as god LKY said and I paraphrase" "If people do not fear me, then I am meaningless".

Thus in future words or phrases which have religious overtone will not be allowed..these would be out-of-bound: "God, god, Allan, Tuhan, prophet, The 'Truth Shall Set You FREE'

It sounds silly but then think of the stupid "unjust laws" in Singapore.

1. Why a bankrupt is banned from standing for election?

2. Why if you are fined for more than $2,000 you are not allowed to stand for election? (correct me is I am wrong in this restriction).

If they ban criminals (blue or white collar) from standing for election or even voting then it make some sense. But why ban a bankrupt. One can go into bankruptcy for many reasons and some of them are not their doing entirely..like late Jaya and Dr. Chee.

These unjust laws or rules must be stopped or else they are being abused by the PAP..like the ISA and the huge defamation pay outs.
• DARYL LIM - he is a man who will fight till his last breath

PM Lee's condolence message sound so crude, while JBJ families are mourning for the loss, PM Lee shouldn't have written past comments on JBJ.. very insulting to JBJ's family. After all, it is for fellow Singaporeans to see the true colours of Lee's regime. The good ones always have to go first.. jia lat, we suffer! PAP gave S'poreans Growth Dividends, NS Allowance are all a whole bunch of bullshit craps.. to summarise, this is money politics!

For bad people, like LKY, it is best that they stick around as long as possible. Else, not only will he end up in a worse place, so will those that he protects.

Thank you for everything, JB Jeyaratnam. You will forever live in our hearts.

So long big guy..you're the true winner in the eyes of everyone in Singapore that fought like you including in Malaysia or even on this planet earth for that matter. In honour of your name that will shinning lights for many years to come, for the generation that'll will talk about you in no time soon. It doesn't matter if you were a Christian, Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist..you stood up to an evil empire for so many years, and we salute you Mr. Jeyaretnam. Vincent, that is what happen when we have a government filled with too many loafers sitting on their asses collecting fat paychecks with nothing better to do but to "fix the opposition".

If those people had even 1/10 the capability of JBJ, then Mas Selemat would not had escaped among other cockups.

He who suffers little pain and passes on is one who reaped good karma.

He who still struggles to torture the lot will reap bad karma. There will not be easy death for such a 'being'. Punishment awaits him, in every level of Hell. His decendents will also reap the bad karma that he commited. We shall all wait and see the karma takes its owner to task.

i saw him on tv 25 years ago in the parliament, arguing with LKY. I had not heard anyone who spoke as eloquently, and as factually as JB. I recall seeing LKY's neck veins popping out like they were gonna burst.

Though he's sued and fined to the extent of declaring bankruptcy, he never gave up his pursuit. Now here's a man who has "BALLS"!!!

Singapore has just lost a true patriot.

But alas, every election, the same people get voted in...

We have religion so that our lives would be much more meaningful and much more organised. So that we may not exploit fellow beings and that we may not subject them to slavery.

Atheist like LKY exploit fellow and subject them to modern form of slavery because they lack compassion and love.

People who believe in Unseen Being and retribution will be fearful of His Punishment and will never transgress the boundaries that has been set.

Democracy ensures that people are not exploited, not subjected to any form of slavery and not be fearful in speaking up their minds about injustice. Democracy is not just about voting but seeking the truth through rationale reasoning. It is about asking why, why and why the need for certain things.

And there is no contradictions in that with religion because as far as I know, as a Muslim, our religion demand us to enquire for the truth and forbids blind-following.

Maybe you followed the religion founded by LKY which tells you to "don't ask, just follow".

Salam Reformasi!
• victor - SDP TO LEARN FROM JBJ
Though JBJ is in the opposing camps, condolences had poured in even from the PAP such as PM, SM, even Bala visited the wake.

This obviously shown JBJ is very much well loved and respected by Singapore and Singaporean. JBJ fought for Singaporean, loves Singaporean though he does not speak chinese. Even when he was bankupt, he continues legally to get himself off, start his legal practice, start a new REFORM PARTY, WITHOUT THE HELP OF FOREIGN DEMOCRACY!

Young SDP Members had a lot to learn from JBJ. Do it without foreigners, and get yourself elected to serve Singaporean, just as what JBJ had done. Don't do stupid things like PROTEST, BOYCOTT.
• Jason Lee - Saluting the real warrior
Critics of the late JBJ need to ask themselves just one simple question: Why did a bankrupt in his 80s make an attempt to discharge himself from bankruptcy? Ask any bankrupt who's in his 60s, 70s, whether he will pay off his bankruptcy debts worth $200,000+ and the answer is likely to be NO. Why not use the money for own's consumption - especially at such an age? Why then did Mr JBJ clear his debts? Only one answer - love for Singapore, and his desire to enter parliament to fight for all Singaporeans.

A real warrior!

you seem to lack intellectual insight thus these insulting verses.

Have you had a chance to watch JBJ fight for our justice? Have you met him in person and heard his words of wisdom?

No? What were you doing all these while, cowering at the feet of our profiteering government hoping that someday your children would enjoy their dictatorship , almost-monarchic rulership?

If this site offends you so much, why are you even here? Disrespecting a dead hero doesnt make you anyone worthy of respect as well.
