DPA

The Singapore government is urging parents to play matchmaker to find appropriate spouses for their single sons and daughters, said The Strait Times Monday. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong floated the idea during his National Day Rally recently by telling parents to follow the lead of thousands of mainland Chinese who have secretly sought sons- and daughters-in-law in parks and outings and were successful.

Parents in Singapore will attend arranged events and bring their offsprings' CVs, business cards and photographs to swap with others, to identify suitable partners that they would approve of, the report said.

One parent was quoted as saying she decided to play Cupid because "my son is too busy with his work and he doesn't have time to socialize."

The Singapore Government just wouldn't let go... they even want to interfere in people's marriages... what next? Husband and wife must take a break once every 6 months from each other before stress sink in...?? LOL

The only government I have seen so hardup in becoming 'KPO' to individuals' life in the world...they have make themselves as matchmaker... LoL

Don't be surprise if the future son-in-law look like the late Ah Meng or daughter-in-law looks like the manly Ho mia as long as got 'brain'... (the most stupid idea by being educated = good genes)

    Whuakakakaka!!

    Choy!Choy! Touchwood! Nau'dzubillah! God Forbid!! :P
  • anon - Good Intention
I think it is good to have more real Singaporeans instead of those foreign imports. I don't fault the government for trying. I would suggestion that they look deeper into the issue why Singaporeans are not marrying and not "producing". I suggest self-examination ...

Why the hell would anyone want to pop out a kid in Singapore?! The ever increasing cost or living coupled with the ever decreasing quality of life make this little red booger an intolerable place to live. The national obsession with money (in all forms) has eaten away at the Singaporean soul, and what is left is nothing more than an economic fuction. It might be idealistic, but I would want something better for my child, if I ever have one!
  • kitsura - Singaporean Romeo & Juliet
Haven't these million dollar jokers learnt anything from Shakespeare?

Playing with peoples' emotions only end up with tragedy. Do they really need a modern day Singaporean Romeo and Juliet story on our hands before they are convinced to stop playing god with the peoples' lives?

    Arranged marriages are for losers!!!!
  • angry_one
People are unable to get a partner, and unwilling to breed, because the quality of life here stinks! I for one will never want my sons to be born as LKY's slaves!

Look at the fundamentals of nature. Put too many animals in a cage and they'll never breed and start killing each other. Put them in a place full of open space and food, and they'll multiply like rabbits!

Only million dollar talented ministers can think of this. million dollar brain indeed.. hehehe.. :D :D :D
  • anon - the joke is on us
Well ... you may scream and shout ... why the multi-million dollar ministers are X and Y or Z. But the greatest joke is on us, we gave them the power to abuse us, the joke is on us.

They are laughing all the way to the bank ... we are the bunch of real loser. Even when they F'ed us left, right and center, we still continue to let them F'ed us.

    The joke must stop.

you obviously do not read the newspapers wholesomely and selectively leave out things?

firstly, this idea came from overseas - so your assertion that it is "only in singapore" is factually incorrect.

secondly, the govt cannot let go, can it? when it does let go, what happens? the fertility rate plummets further. a responsible govt, although clearly lacking in your support, cannot adopt a lackadaisical and laizze faire attitude to such issues. i cant imagine you are suggesting otherwise.

please constructively and selectively criticize. but please do not selectively read - it will give you slanted views like these easily.

This is a million dollar idea.
    Brainstorming: $250,000
    Meeting: $250,000
Recreation from all the hard work: $250,000
    Publishing this great idea: $250,000
Implementing this million dollar idea: Priceless!!! LOL.
  • Paul - Made in Singapore
It is disturbing enough to experience the PAP's brand of Asian totalirianism in our daily lives. Not only do these self-proclaimed clever ministers control so much of the minute details of our private lives, they now seem to have abandoned the notion that we are human beings.

The way they think is that if Factory Singapore is suffering from a shortage of human beings, the way to tackle it is to press a button and Singaporeans will respond robotically by working harder and faster at procreation. They must get matched and then hatch for the PAP, just like that.

Surely one thing which distinguishes us from animals is our ability to fall in love with someone of our own choosing. I don't know if animals are capable of that as I don't speak their language. Perhaps one of you who has supernatural powers of communication can tell me if I'm wrong here. There is nothing more demeaning and dehumanising than to go out and procure, as it were, a wife or husband off the shelf.

Here's one for that allegedly superior human being, the government minister lauded to the skies by LKY and highly paid for being the best of breed. Since we have been told in no uncertain terms by your MM that you are better than the common people, why are you not doing your bit for Singapore by producing 10 or 20 children? Why are you not procreating for Singapore to improve the quality of the nation's gene pool? Too exhausted by all the jumping around everytime the MM tells you to?
  • ah beng - how to marry?
Alamak, I don't have the 5c, how to get married? Maybe the garment is talking about the superrich people. If like that, then no need to discuss already. You think the garment talkin about you getting married is it? You no money, not like the ministers. Marriage is only for ministers, not we all. Mr.Lee, can pass some money or not?

If our government is indeed a responsible one, then obviously the very 1st thing they would had done is got rid of that inaccurate old man who started this whole mess with his stop at 2 and other rubbish policies, as well as stop heralding his hypocrisies over the last half century.

The old man is still there isn't he, so what responsible government are you talking about when they don't even dare to admit their own mistakes?
  • AnnA - Paul
I saw a documentary on penguins. I don't know if they fall in love but I do see that they know who their mate is and stick for each other :) - but of course with own choice and not forced ;)
  • AnnA - curious
I saw the news many weeks ago happened in China. Didn't expect that PAP will want to copy it. Was the China matchmaking done by their Govt. or matchmaking organisation? I'm not sure cos I've forgo the news.

While ours is being idea-ed by an incapable to think rationally PM. Its a copied idea and a laughable one. LKY's son is a joker... he is falling Singapore.
  • AnnA - Follow Good Standard
The Singapore government should follow Kuwait's style in encouraging young Singaporean into commitments. If they want ro be seen as having first class standard!!

You have posted 2 views on this issue. Which one do you want us to follow? Are you not contradicting yourself as either view is not to your liking. As advised by curious, read, read, read all views and reports before opening your big wide mouth. Don't simply anyhow gasak and shoot wildly without using your otak!
  • AnnA - Richard Kong
While it is a laughable issue to see our govt. following China's step in matchmaking, having first world standard, the govt. should have taken Kuwait style of encouraging Singaporean to get married. Instead of some cheap way as matchmaking without consent!! While Kuwait gave handsome support, gifts to young couples with their own choice of mate, Singapore Govt., on the other hand, contrary to being 1st class brain and they've resorted to being matchmaker?

i dont understand why my reply and reaction to anna's post is highlighted in a different hue.

is sdp saying my comment is less favorable than someone else's?

has freedom of speech taken on such a narrow and sdp-centric definition that even my reply to anna is pre-judged?

    double standards?
  • ck2727 - TO BLEED OR TO BREED?
How to bleed and breed for Singapore at the same time if the country is run like a factory where all we chase are number$ and figure$. To breed, we'll need a better enviroment than this. Give me one and I'll give you a dozen.
  • curious - to anna
again, you trivializes and scandalize the situation at hand to try and score a political point or wax an unsubstantial comedic lyrical.

the govt CANNOT leave the situation of declining birthrate alone as no indicators have vaguely showed that such a "hands-off" approach will be the way forward.

for something that almost resemble a national population crisis, i am disheartened and disappointed at your decision to trivialize the matter and not engage in constructive talk about how it can be best tackled.

your obvious detest for the govt might be legitimate, but please moderate yourself and stop this indiscriminate spewing of ridiculous notions around.

Awesome Words

The liberty that the citizen enjoys is to be measured not by the governmental machinery he lives under, whether representative or otherwise, but by the paucity of restraints that it imposes upon him.
