Singapore Democrats

Mr M Ravi was brought to the High Court on Friday morning to argue a Criminal Motion he had filed against the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) where he has been remanded since 18 Aug 08.

Ms Chee Siok Chin had tried to visit Mr Ravi but was told by the hospital that Mr Ravi was not allowed visitors, not even family members, as he is in remand. This is obviously not true because Sheila, one of Mr Ravi's sisters, had in fact visited him.

Sheila spoke to the hospital staff about Ms Chee's visit because Mr Ravi had requested to see Ms Chee. But this was turned down. It is understood, however, that one of Mr Ravi's clients was allowed to visit him on several occasions.

Another area of inconsistency is Mr Ravi's treatment. While the hospital says that the lawyer would not be given medication, Mr Ravi's family members said that he had been given medication. In fact, the prosecutor revealed in court Mr Ravi was on medication.

This sort of conflicting information raises serious questions about how Mr Ravi is being treated.

Mr Ravi argued before High Court Judge Tay Yong Kwang that he should not be further remanded at IMH. He pointed out that, since a diagnosis had already been made, then he should be free to seek treatment from other psychiatrists rather than be held at the IMH. Custodial rights, the lawyer argued, cannot and should not be returned to those against whom he is taking out the criminal motion.

Judge Tay dismissed the application. He did not give reasons for his decision.

sorry anna, hate to say this but singapore is lky. unless you guys stand up for yourselves and make sacrifices for yourselves, why should any country do the work that apparently singaporeans refuse, or do not care to do on their own.

i agree, it's getting worse in singapore. however, unless you are prepared to stand up for yourselves and do something, why should anyone, especially a foreign country do anything for you? after living in singapore, i would never let my son do battle for a people that will not battle for themselves. to this day i tell people of the people in singapore and how people will not dirty their hands when needed but will guard their bank account more readily than their freedoms, liberties, and rights.

last time i checked, 18 actually did something while hundreds if not thousands did nothing. so really, why help a country that does not help itself?

you should be banging down the door to see ravi, all of you should... but you aren't are you. so again, why should any foreigner help you?

hey, i'm on your side. but the difference between me and almost all of you is that while you are waiting for lky to die, what i see is a day when dr. chee dies and how none of you marched, fought, and sacrificed along with the one man who perhaps gave you the best chance you ever had to gain your freedoms, liberties, and rights. mind you JB is not getting any younger too. so instead of WAITING for lky to DIE, help the warriors among you LIVE and fight beside them. then maybe, just maybe other countries will stand behind you.

• g_e - Has it now come to this?
"Soviet and Western human rights experts have long charged that political and religious dissidents in the Soviet Union have been confined to mental hospitals. In 1983, the Soviet Union resigned from the World Psychiatric Association rather than face a likely expulsion as a result of reports on the use of mental hospitals to confine dissidents."
- The New York Times, Saturday, September 6, 2008

"In a telegram from 1971, noted Soviet physicist Andrei Sakharov supports the protests of two dissidents, V. Fainberg and V. Borisov, who have been hospitalized in a Leningrad psychiatric institution for "asocial behavior." An accompanying memorandum from the USSR Minister of Health affirms the legitimacy and advisability of hospitalizing the two dissidents in the institution, run by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and denies the use of mind-altering medications in their treatment."

History repeating itself?
• Ng E-Jay - preposterous
According to ST, IMH lawyer Kuah Boon Theng said that M. Ravi has repeatedly refused to take his medicine in IMH.

Is this another contradiction to their claim that M. Ravi was NOT given medication?

Absurd.
• ExSINgaporean - Insane
Watch out. Dr. Chee could be the next two held in the IMH..PAP would explain that it is for his own GOOD.

Thanks you PAPee.
• anon - Criminal
Isn't this a criminal act?

This is yet another tactics to silence Singaporean, like what he did to Lim Chin Siong.
• Paul - Judge Muck
Once upon a time, such dark deeds by a judge would have remained under the covers of the PAP propaganda broadsheet. No longer. The internet has enabled information to be fast and far and wide. I am grateful to the SDP for exposing the biased inconsistencies committed by a shameless member of the profession whose watchword should be "without fear or favour".

The law is trampled over without compunction by unjust judges in their hobnailed boots. Their judgements are arbitrary and capricious to say the least. They will be surely called to account one day. "I was obeying my paymaster" or "I did what everyone else did" will not be acceptable excuses. Your time is now but our time will come. You might as well start holding your breath as the day will come soon.
• Ah Heng
Very soon LKY and his family member all will go in to Institute of Mental Health, soon very soon. Judgement is near them
• methink
We do well to remember this...

"In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up."

In Sinkapoor, they came first for the Marxist conspirators, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Marxist conspirator;
And then they came for the political activists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a political activist;
And then they came for the Lawyers, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Lawyer;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up.

How true and real!

if Ravi wasn't nuts.. how could PAP "silence" him? Unless of course, Ravi is indeed nuts and PAP took the OPPORTUNITY to do so.
• Want Operation Singapore Freed
IBA is not as powerful as the US military invading eg Iraq
• Why is the West so great
Do you want a Sarah Palin as your DPM? To encourage pre marital sex? Is that the Western Society SDP wants? Francis Fukuyama was wrong.
• Tan Tai Wei
The "contradiction" is more fundamental.

In nothing lesser than the High Court's agreeing to hear Ravi's motion against the IMH, it was already conceded that he was of mind sound enough for his complain to be taken seriously by the state, and for him to argue his own case before the austere court.

Then why was his appeal against continued detention at IMH refused?
• To Why is the West so great
Sarah Palin is a conservative; she does not stand for pre-marital sex based on her personal pro-life convictions. And that is why she has her daughter to marry the father of the baby instead of aborting it.

Check your facts.
• V.Benedict - Broader perception
a Reply to Why is the West so great.

I presume you are referring to US. Cause you mentioned Sarah Palin.

If the US is not great than who else? Singapore?
Even if Ms Sarah Palin is elected, United States of America is still great. US is the driving force on this planet. Military or economic. No second doubt about it. Ironically, have you ask yourself why US is still great even Ms Sarah Palin is in. The answer you can find is to broader your perception.

Lastly, the reason why you know Ms Sarah Palin encourage pre marital sex is because of US press freedom that you have benefitted. Do we have it here?

Why are you not standing up and be counted to help Ravi in his hour of need instead of calling for foreigners to help? Are you prostituting yourself to foreigners or a traitor calling foreigners to attack Singapore? If you don't help yourself, why should foreigners help to screw you up!
• AnnA - Richard Kong?
Is asking for assistance to one who holds the power against a tyranny called prostituting?? I wonder what happened if your female relatives who were in dire need of help are called? Don't make me sound like you lah... You follow father footstep right? But I didn't although I'm your half sister, Kong. So, what's with your name? Were you so horny when you put your name as Kong? 'Kong' asshole or what?

I am sure that by giving your asshole to the ruling member must have let you feel the pleasure. How much did you get from them? Can share information?
• Sinister Minister
Richard, or shall i call you dick...
anna is not prostituting herself. she asked for foreign intervention and i was the one who pointed out that you cannot ask for something that you will not give. i was the one that said, and this goes for everyone, that instead of waiting for lky to die, help others live. and i believe anna and others understood that.

dick, you have no clue and only wish to jump on a person if given a chance. i don't have to know you to know that you grumble everyday about the government. you are unhappy, scared, afraid, and no offense to anna, but i have no doubt she has a bigger pair of balls than a man named dick. I know you grumble everyday about foreigners and the cost of living. i know you grumble about petro, the crowded mrt's and buses. I know you... we all know you... you re kiasu dick.

when i return home my plan is either to go into politics or to teach. either way, it is people like you dick that i will use as an example of what a wasted life is.

Democracy and human right are universal, no west or east. I don't know how you come to the conclusion that we think the west is great.

By the way Palin promotes abstinence before marriage. Her daughter premarital sex gave Palin a slap on her cheek.

Watch out. Dr. Chee could be the next two held in the IMH..PAP would explain that it is for his own GOOD.
FamiLee/Pap Junta will stop at nothing to silence their critics!

Please beware Chees/SDP and all Oppositions!
• FamiLee's doses give them back - Hang in there!
A well said quote from Mr Gopalan Nair for Mr Ravi-
I had also pointed out that I had no respect for the Singapore judiciary which has been seen to be used as a political tool to silence dissent. I pointed out that it was not just I saying this but the respected International Bar Association in their recent 72-page report says just as much. As for remorse, I said I have none. As I have not committed any crime, how can someone expect me to have remorse? I told the judge that if it makes him happy, I could say I am sorry, but truly I am not; since it is impossible for someone to have remorse for a crime he did not commit. Saying sorry will therefore not do any good, neither for me nor for the judge. Just because the judge James Leong says I am guilty, does not make me so.
Just hang in there, don't get personal as you know this is typical FamiLee's style for Oppositions in Stinkapore!

Hold you cool like Mr Nair and give them hell back!
• angry_one
Dear 2nd poster,

I completely agree with your views on this. Sinkaporeans are the only ones who can affect change in sinkapore. They alone must realise that this island belongs to them and not the Lee family, and make the sacrifice to earn their freedom.

Begging NGOs for help stems for the same mentality that enabled the PAP to hold on to power - the mentality of waiting for something to happen rather than taking ownership.

Me, i lost faith in this rock long ago, and am working on my immigration plans. The real problem here is NOT the PAP....it's the people.
• Sinister Minister
Amen.
the problem is the people.
I think Dr. Chee perhaps arrived on this Earth one or two maybe three generations too early because that is about the time it will take before Singapore ultimately meltsdown.

Although when that meltdown happens, it will be too late. That is why I said do not wait for LKY to die. Your power does not come in his death. Your power comes in Dr. Chee's, JBJ's, and other's including you... your power comes in your's and their lives.

What do you need to happen to react?
all you pap lovers out there, tell us, "what would it take for you to lose confidence in the pap, what would be your breaking point?"

and SDP lovers, "What would it take to happen before you took to the streets?"

I promise you your answers will be more similar than different.

By calling the foreigners to intervene and attack Singapore is not prostituting, then by logical deduction you are the traitor. My other name is Kek Kek and the full name is Kong Kek Kek, in short Kong Kek. As I said to you I am not following my father footstep and since the rumah tua bersapu chat baru is so desperate and keep on pleading me for help, I shall oblige you one time only to change you not to be a traitor to Sinkees and all of us can live in peace instead of subjecting ourselves to foreign rule.

You are full of evils and sins and want all of us in Sinkees to suffer when the foreigners invade Singapore while you enjoy the spectacle in the safety of a foreign land. Your monicker Sinister Minister betrays your true character of being sinful and evil through out your short life in this world. You are using your life to harm people and Sinkees will never forgive you regardless of the political affilitations and support they hold!
