Iranian-American student detained in Iran

An Iranian-American student, Esha Momeni, who was detained on October 15 in Tehran still remains in jail. She is reportedly being held in Section 209 of Evin Prison, which is under the control of Iran's Intelligence Ministry. Her family and lawyer have not received permission to see her and the charges against her are unclear. Her family and friends believe she is being held in connection to her research for her master's degree thesis.

Egypt arrests Islamist activists

Egyptian police have arrested 26 Muslim Brotherhood members over the past two days, the Islamists and security officials said. Twelve men were arrested in raids this morning in Fayoum province south of Cairo for suspected involvement in an attempt to bring medical supplies to Gaza earlier this month, the Brotherhood said on its website.

Egypt arrests pro-Gaza Islamists

Egypt's outlawed Muslim Brotherhood movement says 32 members have been detained for joining protests aimed at breaking the Gaza Strip blockade. The group said 14 people were held in Port Said, 12 in Fayyoum and a number of others in Cairo and Beni Sueif.

Calls to release Jordanian poet

Writers in Jordan are calling for the immediate release of a poet charged with insulting Islam in love poetry. Islam Samhan's recent collection, Grace Like A Shadow, includes phrases from the Koran, viewed as sacrosanct by Muslims as the literal word of God.

Peace activists to try ending Israeli siege on Palestine, Gaza

On October 28, 2008, the Free Gaza Movement will set sail again for Gaza. On board will be a Nobel Peace Prize winner, five physicians, a member of the Israeli Knesset, and a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council. The boat will again carry 26 passengers and crew to the port of Gaza.
