Egypt: Dissident leader criticises Cairo for Hezbollah crackdown

Egyptian opposition leader and political dissident Ayman Nour says the government has been "foolish" in its crackdown on alleged members of the Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah movement. Last week, Egypt announced the arrest of 49 members of a Hezbollah cell suspected to be operating inside Egypt and planning attacks on both Egyptian and Israeli targets.

Iran: The latest situation in Roxana Saberi's case

Roxana Saberi is an Iranian-American journalist who was arrested on February 10.  She has been held in section 209 in Evin Prison and Iranian authorities claim that she has been collecting reports without a valid permit for journalism.  For the past few years, Ms. Saberi has worked with the BBC network, NPR radio and other international media.

Iran: Students in Industrial University of Babol begin their sit-in protest and hunger strike

Beginning at 8:00 am on Saturday, April 11, three students from the Industrial University of Babol began a hunger strike inside the campus. Also, hundreds of students in this university held a sit-in to protest increasing pressures against student movements imposed by the administration of Mr. Ahmadinejad.

How Muslim countries must deal with radicals

The Islamist Muslim Brotherhood is gaining undeniable popularity. It's doing so by exploiting democratic methods. That poses an existential problem for the future of democracy in the Arab world. To legitimize the movement - the main representative of political Islam - runs the risk of succumbing to fanatics opposed to democracy. To outlaw it may lead to its further radicalization. But there's a way Muslim governments can avoid this Catch-22: They can contain the Islamist threat without harming budding democracies by undermining the Brotherhood with educational, social, and economic reforms.

Our common humanity is  indivisible at its core.  When we summon that essence that defines our commonality as human beings, we cannot impose a particular logic in Gaza and enforce a different logic in Galilee. Every battle for human dignity, liberty, justice and equity in every part of the world is linked to that basic core of our common humanity. This is one thing that escapes the Arab world, particularly its leadership, since the second half of the 20th century.

Iran: Praised globally, detained locally

On the brink of the Persian New Year, the first day of Spring, Iranian women activists heard some encouraging news. The illustrious honoree at the Feminist Majority Foundation's Fifth Annual Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Global Women's Rights is the Campaign for One Million Signature Demanding Changes to Discriminatory Laws in Iran. The Change for Equality Website reported that the One Million Signatures Campaign also known as the Campaign for Equality is the recipient of the award "in special recognition of their innovating work to demand an end to discriminatory laws against women in Iran."
