Thousands gather for street protests against Georgian president

Thousands of protesters were today gathering in Tbilisi to demonstrate against the Georgian president, Mikheil Saakashvili. Demonstrators in what will be the largest anti-government protest in Georgia since last summer's disastrous war with Russia are demanding Saakashvili's immediate resignation.

Georgia: Opposition gives Saakashvili ultimatum to resign

On the kickoff day of what they pledge could be ongoing protests, organizers of Tbilisi's April 9 opposition rally gave Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili 24 hours to resign over alleged misdeeds ranging from election fraud to the 2008 war with Russia.

Policing in the UK: Death and denials

Possibly the most poignantly succinct comments about the events leading up to the death of Ian Tomlinson during the London G20 protests were made by his son, Paul King, in an interview on BBC Radio 4's The World At One yesterday. "That's not correct policing," said Mr King, about the way the police struck and then pushed his father to the ground, as recorded in the Guardian's video evidence of events on 1 April. Mr King then paused before adding: "There was no need for that."

Russia: Case closed on suspicious death of Moscow journalist

Investigators in Moscow have closed their investigation into the death of Yury Shchekochikhin, an independent journalist who died under mysterious circumstances in 2003, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports. Shchekochikhin, 54, worked for the Moscow-based independent newspaper "Novaya gazeta." The official cause of his death was declared to be an allergic reaction, but his colleagues told RFE/RL that they doubt the official version.

Young Moldovans turn to Twitter as they protest elections they say were rigged

Young Moldovans have outwitted their Communist leaders with Twitter. The social network came in handy after mobile phone networks went down and cable news television stations went off air on Tuesday as 10,000 people protested what they say were rigged elections. Some stormed Parliament and the offices of President Vladimir Voronin in violent riots that left more than 90 injured and led to 200 arrests.Anch2

After a 'spontaneous' riot, Moldovans look for answers

On Wednesday, Moldova's Parliament building was seared black from fire, and its ceremonial entryway was spray-painted with crossed-out hammers and sickles. Filing cabinets lay where they crashed to the ground the night before, while office papers were tangled in the boughs of pine trees. Ruslan Grosu, 21, stood outside, trying to make sense of it. "A little revolution happened here," he said. "There is this power in our youth, and they should respect our wishes."

UK: Six arrests at Tamil London demo

Six people have been arrested during clashes between the police and Tamils who are staging an ongoing protest outside the Houses of Parliament. Scores of police officers boxed in hundreds of demonstrators to move them off the roads and into Parliament Square, sparking minor scuffles.
