ERP increase - Tak Boleh Tahan! Print Email
Thursday, 26 June 2008
Singapore Democrats

Activists protested against the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) by unfurling a Tak Boleh Tahan! banner underneath the ERP gantry at Bras Basah.

The Government recently put up several more gantries along Fullerton Road, Eu Tong Sen Street, New Bridge Road and South Bridge Road. Gantries have also been erected outside the city centre, for example at Toa Payoh Lorong 6.

In addition the rates for the ERP have been steadily increasing over the past few years. ERP charges have also been implemented on Saturdays as well as in the evenings along the expressway to charge motorists on their way home.

The ERP does not serve the intended purpose of controlling traffic and reducing congestion in a meaningful way. But it has been a windfall for the Government in terms of revenue collection.

In addition the charges have added to the already burdensome cost of living for Singaporeans. It is also crippling small- and medium-sized businesses.

Tak Boleh Tahan! activists are not willing to sit by and do nothing while the PAP exploits the people. Singaporeans are encouraged to get active and protest against the greed of the ruling party.

Protesters were also at hawker centres to protest against rising food prices (see photo on left). The Tak Boleh Tahan! activists call on Singaporeans to join the campaign and tell the PAP: “We can't take it anymore!”

If everyone just sits back and does nothing, the PAP will continue to exploit and run roughshod over us. So stand up for your rights!

    Question:

    Do ministers pay taxes?

How about the bonuses? How many months?

Very soon, there will be an ERP gantry outside every home - HDB might even be looking at installing ERP technology into its gates in new homes and as part of 'renewal' or upgrading.

Think they wouldn't do it? Well, think again.

PAP has redefined the meaning of government, which is to look after and care for its citizens, to one that goes out of its way to bully its citizenry at all costs.

Instead of going overseas and using taxpayers' accumulated funds to earn others' money, this government and those working directly under it (increasingly foreigners who have no qualms about driving Singaporeans to their graves) spend their time working out elaborate scams, er, schemes, to milk the poor hapless Singaporean for what he is worth.

ingaporeans, don't hope to catch the next flight - most can't afford to start afresh in a new land anyway. And why should you ship out, at any rate?

    It's your country.

Ship PAP - and its crazy ideas - out instead. Bring down the Lees!

Yes, topple that government - call it revolt, call 'subversion', call it what you want, we don't care anymore, for Singaporeans have nothing to lose anymore.

And lest you think you and your family can get away to a foreign jurisdiction that will gladly accept you for your ill-gotten billions, let it be said right hre and right now, the next Singapore government formed will go to the ends of the world to seek extradiction - even Indonesia with whom we have no such pact, or the others you have deliberately left 'open' - to haul you and clan back to face the gallows, gallows you yourself love to send your opponents to
  • Yoong Kheong - Offer Solutions too
It's heartening to know that SDP pays attention to the sentiments of the populace.

Perhaps it's also good to provide alternatives or elaborate further on the faults of the ERP policy (which is aplenty) on another article.

    ERP = Everyday Rob People
A very nice and accurate phase.
    All above articles well mentioned.
Some asked for alternative solution or suggestion to beat PAP ideas. Honestly, sometimes don't you think it is better to leave things as it is rather than increase this and increase that at the pretext of always the same reason of reducing traffic congesture. I think nobody will contest that Saturday should in the 1st place have any ERP charges! Today, our MM mentioned that if government falls into the hand of opposition, Singapore will be doom in 5 years. My sentiment is if we do not give credible opposition a chance, Singaporean will continue to be slave machines for the PAP fat pay cheque for another 50 years. In between, can the moderator highlight whether do you see there is an increased in traffic in this forum? If yes, it is a good news because you are seeing more and more people is concern about who should rule Singapore in the future.
  • Holy - Funny PAP
They want to reduce number of cars on the roads yet they are pumping so much money in expanding expressways and roads and building new ones. They might as well dun build right? How come they are like slapping their own faces with this confusing policies. Dun tell me they build the roads just for the VIP AND MINISTERS to travel on and keep taxing until only the RICH and POWERFUL can be on the road. They are wasting dam a lot of tax payers money....

  • WTF
ERP bad? Why is London doing the same thing like us? Their toll charges is at least 5 pounds(S$15). And you are complaining? You want our roads to be as congested as KL, Bangkok? Not to mention the smog and pollution.

Might as well let all the cars go in, congested and then complain again. WTF.
  • reply to WTF
WTF, in principal, i think motorist are not complaining about the ERP system by large. What we are complaining is do the government need to increase ERP rates during this difficult period of inflation? Don't help never mind but don't add oil to fire lah...

Don't you think the increase in petrol price will put certain check on the traffic flow? Don't you think the parking charges in the CBD area is sufficient to deter more motorist going in? How to agree with the reason cited that the increase is to reduce "traffic congestion". Did they did a study and have a figure to validate their claim? No, they don't.

This seem the simpliest reason for the increase in ERP fee. Let's be honest, i think we all know the increase is to increase the government revenue!

    Why try deceiving yourself?

Their road sweeper earning 1000 lbs per month, your road sweeper earning how much ? you want to compare ? WTF

Very soon after their first-ever recapitalization exercise to cover sub-prime losses in which SWFs scramble to grab their piece of this prestigious banking pie, UBS and now Merrill Lynch and Citigroup, in quick succession, announce another round of recapitalization.

You could argue they hadn't known during Round One just what a bigger black hole these sub-prime losses really were, so they cannot be admonished for making - hehe, i love this - "honest mistakes".

More importantly, the common SWF investors in ALL THREE are GIC and Temasek Holdings, which are the same in all but name, being 'family holdings' since one is headed by the family patriach and the other his daughter-in-law, wife of the prime minister of the country from which those 2 SWFs come from.

I don't hate Citi, ML & UBS at all for what they are doing.

On the contrary, I simply love them to bits, for doing what Singaporeans could never hope to do - make these babboons look more babboon-ic now.

Way to go, guys. Hope you announce a third round of recapitalization exercise :woohoo:

After, of course, TemaGIC (maGIC, MAGIC no more  :D :P ) has taken full subscription - again - for what you have to offer a la Rounds one and Two.

Thank you. I salute you, dudes B)

PS - No wonder even Choo-choo has given up on them (Cantonese say "没眼睇囖~", or in mandarin "再也看不下去了!!!") and decide to go join Harry's mother down in Nine Springs ahead of schedule. Any day now - announcement of her swift passing. Singaporeans to get ready for GST raise again this year - to cover THEIR funeral expenses.

    WTF...
London's minimum wage is how much? Singapore one is how much?

Sure KL and Bangkok are congested, but they are a city. The people have a choice to move away to rural areas.

What rural areas do Singaporeans have?

This is not an issue of cars, its an issue of cost!

    WTF,

Road congestion is more the result of poor road planning than over congestion of cars, I know this suggesion is simplistic and if they had planned properly then they wouldn't have the excuse to impose ERP.

For the first time, this reader agrees with most, if not all, points put out by your Editor - very insightful indeed, many of which were.

However, there are just as many too which, although at first seem very truthful, are, alas, half-way up the Ladder of Truth, meaning true to a point but need ‘topping up’ to make those points more poignant.

As an example, no one can deny that “however absurd the cons, obviously not all those who received such phone calls STOPPED TO THINK about verifying what was told to them”.

Did your Editor also “STOPPED TO THINK” that these people, having been indoctrinated (brainwashed) the way they have for the last half-century, could ever have the capacity to … THINK?

Especially time and again, whenever they try to do so, a flash of hard-hitting lightning comes down hard right on top them to warn them to STOP THINKING, DO NOT THINK, DO NOT EVEN ATTEMPT TO THINK or we will strike you harder the next time you do or attempt to do so.

Is it therefore any wonder that these people possess the faculty of thought?

Your Editor was also absolutely spot-on when he wrote that these people “let the crooks victimize them TWICE”. But he also forgot, in a bout of convenient amnesia, that more than these people, the population, as a whole, also let THE CROOKS victimize them – and not jus
