Tool: CiviCRM for better communication
By: Frederick Noronha, DigiActive, April 15, 2009
When a small campaign becomes a permanent organization, there are often difficulties in scaling.  A small group can communicate with supporters through a Google Group, but what if you have multiple constituencies or you want to record information about your supporters that will help you communicate with them effectively? Wouldn't you like to manage your "relationships" better? Or, be more efficient in sending out appeals and updates? Tap the right quarters when it comes to fund-raising? Know exactly who your potential supporters could be?

Nation-state routing: Globalizing censorship
By: iRevolution, April 13, 2009
I just found an interesting piece on Internet censorship at arXiv, my favorite go-to place for scientific papers that are pre-publication. Entitled "Nation-State Routing: Censorship, Wiretapping and BGP," this empirical study is possibly the first to determine the aggregate effect of national policies on the flow of international traffic. 'As government control over the treatment of Internet traffic becomes more common, many people will want to understand how international reachability depends on individual countries and to adopt strategies either for enhancing or weakening the dependence on some countries.'

Roma are scapegoats during downturn
By: Marina Litvinsky, IPS, April 8, 2009
On International Roma Day, Wednesday, human rights groups voiced their concern for the discrimination and violence against Roma in European countries. Held on Apr. 8 every year since 1990, International Roma Day draws attention to discrimination directed at Roma and gypsy communities globally, according to Amnesty International (AI). Roma are stigmatised as criminals based on the actions of a few, according to Paul Legendre, director of the fighting discrimination program at Human Rights First (HRF). Roma are often viewed as a scapegoat for broader societal ills, often characterised as outsiders who are less than citizens and are unwanted in their respective communities, he explained.

'Building Peace Practical Reflections From the Field', edited by Craig Zelizer and Robert A. Rubinstein
By: Peace and Collaborative Development Network, April 16, 2009
Even though international peacebuilding has rapidly expanded in the last two decades to respond to more multi-faceted and complex conflicts, the field has lagged behind in documenting the impact and success of projects. To help address this gap, the Alliance for Peacebuilding, one of the leading networks in the field, has brought together 13 stories of innovative peacebuilding practices from around the world in Building Peace.

Panel to discuss building solidarity with Iraq's civil resistance
By: The National Organization for the Iraqi Freedom Struggles (NO-IFS), April 19, 2009
Although eclipsed from the headlines by the ongoing carnage in Iraq, there is an active civil resistance in the country that opposes the occupation, the regime it protects, and the jihadist and Baathist "resistance" alike. This besieged opposition - under threat of repression and assassination - is fighting to keep alive and extend elementary freedoms for women, leading labor struggles against Halliburton and other U.S. contractors as well as Iraqi businesses, calling for relief for the masses thrown out of work since the U.S. invasion, opposing privatization of the country's oil and other natural resources, and demanding a secular future for Iraq.

Shut down ICE: Civil disobedience training
By: Twin Cities Indymedia, April 2009
For 3 years now people have been marching, petitioning, lobbying for change. We have heard hopeful words from the Obama administration, yet as we write, more national guard are being sent to the border, families are being torn apart, our communities are being terrorized, and workers are sitting in detention centers, where documented human rights abuses have occurred.
