• V.Benedict - A respond to S.T dated 26 Jun 2008
Could SDP kindly insert a respond to the S.T headlines (5 years, all it takes to ruin Singapore) in your daily articles in your website.

Thank and regards.
• Paul - A poll on the web
In response to LKY's pronouncement on the possibility of the opposition coming into power one day, will you please consider the possibility of conducting a poll along the lines of a general election on this website? In all probability, this will be a better way of gauging the feelings of the people. Exploit this online technology before Harry catches on to it.

You need to ensure that the 'one man, one vote' rule is maintained and so you will need to filter out multiple votes from people who have itchy fingers.
• Mr Tan
Dr Chee,

can we have a 'wear black campaign' on national day to show our displease with government. let's link up the public
• Paul - Just testing
I thought I would test the 'one man, one vote' feature on your current poll by voting again. It worked, at least for today! Well done.

ADMINISTRATORS, ARE YOU GOING TO OBLITERATE MY RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH??

WHY IS IT THAT MY CONTRARY VIEWPOINTS ARE NOT POSTED ON YOUR SITE?

WHY IS IT THAT YOU, UNLIKE WHAT YOU PUBLICLY PREACH, DO NOT ALLOW ALL VIEWS TO BE UNFETTERED AND EXPRESSED FOR THE AUDIENCE, THE MATURE ELECTORATE TO MAKE UP THEIR OWN MINDS AS TO WHO IS RIGHT AND WHO IS WRONG?

JUST BECAUSE I HAVE A DIFFERENT VIEW FROM THE REST OF YOU CLOWNS IN SDP, YOU REJECT.

SO MUCH FOR FREEDOM OF SPEECH. YOU ARE NOT FULFILLING YOUR PROMISE EVEN ON THIS WEBSITE PLATFORM, HOW CAN I EVER TRUST YOU TO KEEP YOUR GRAND-SOUNDING PLANS IN REALITY, IN POLITICS?

NO WONDER YOU LOSE CREDIBILITY. EVEN ON SUCH PLATFORMS YOU PLAY YOUR DIRTY, UNDER-HAND TRICKS.

YOU SURE CUT A PITIABLE FIGURE.

THIS IS NOT A MSG INTENDED TO BE SHOWN, BUT I THOUGHT I JUST WANT YOU PEOPLE, SORRY, IMBECILES, TO SEE MY MESSAGE AND HOPEFULLY, "CHANGE" AND BECOME TRULY "DEMOCRATIC".

DO NOT PRACTICE WHAT YOU ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE STRAITS TIMES-THAT IS TO BLACK OUT OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS YOU LIARS AND HYPOCRITES.

SO PEOPLE CAN ONLY SPEAK UP AND OUT AGAINST PAP AND NOT AGAINST YOU?

WHAT MORONS. PRETENTIOUS. SUPER DESPERATE PARTY, I NAME YOU.

PROVE ME WRONG, NOT BY SOME SMART ALEC REPLY, BUT BY YOUR DEEDS. ALLOW FREE SPEECH - UNMODERATED COMMENTS!! LIKE HOW YOU HAVE ALWAYS BOLDLY DONE IN SPORE! UNMODERATED! NO HOLDS BARRED!

WHY CANT I DO IT IF CSJ THE CLOWN CAN? ELITIST. SNOBBISH.

SAME AS THE PAP. SUCKER.

YOU GUYS WILL HAVE KNOWN WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT, SINCE YOU HAVE DELETED MANY OF MY COMMENTS AND NOT POSE THEM UP. I MADE COPIES OF ALL MY COMMENTS KNOWING YOU WILL RESORT TO SUCH DIRTY TRICKS. IF YOU STILL POST THEM UP FOR PUBLIC CONSUMPTION AND DISCUSSION, I WILL SET UP A BLOG AND SHOW THE MANY RESPONSES YOU HAVE OBLITERATED, AND EXPOSE YOUR SHAM OF A DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND FREE SPEECH.

• Joshua Yak - Stop Clowning Around
Why do we have to see a fellow human being of intelligence degrade himself to a clown? To be a sideshow and a humiliation of Singapore in foreign countries? You create false impressions on people many of whom do not have the opportunity to travel to our great nation but get their views twisted by your perverse sense of patriotism. I'm am truly sad that a man with such potential caliber to succeed has committed suicide not only politically but also in your own life. You might be truly caught up in your own illusions but please do not affect this great country of ours! Our home! OUR SINGAPORE!
• snow leopard - Tak Boleh Tahan! campaign goes to Bishan
I wrote to SDP dis mrng to clarify if TBT dis Sun 6 July will be at Blk 282 (Bishan North Shopping Mall) or Blk 289 Bishan St 24.
The reply was "will be at Blk 289, St 22, Bishan and not Blk 282." Incidentally, correct St is 24 not 22 if it's at Blk 289.
However, Blk 289 Bishan St 24 is under renovation. The void deck is enclosed tho accessible BUT not visible from the main road St 22. There is an open courtyard area just behind Prime Supermarket, alight fr bus stop (13,52,54,88,162,162M and 410) and it's directly behind. Pedestrian traffic is also higher there than at Blk 289. Being a Sunday, many people will either be going to the market near Prime or to Prime and its surrounding vicinity.
I think SDP should clarify the exact location so as to maximise high visibility for the campaign. If people make the effort to go and can't find u guys, then it's a sore disappointment.

You are someone who i respect being 22 i have been following all ur party's movments and finally u've got a break.

Yahoo news have caught on and goten interest in Singapore's Lee's political system. Just hold on a proper positioning and dont let PAP see any weakness to make ur uprising a fall...

I support SDA/SDP. frankly i feel PAP needs to be in check, if only we could win half the seats in parliment. the people in singapore will finally see..

the prob w ppl in singapre, esp young, they dont seem to be interested in politics and dont seem to see tat it will affect them in the long run when they become tax payers too

Will you please consider publishing this article?

I find it balanced, aspirational, and most relevant to the current state of things in Singapore. Although it originates from a country Singapore sometimes despises, we should learn to recognize good scholarship and high ideals wherever they may be found. Raja Nazrin has my admiration for speaking up cogently and intelligently for the common people. A person in his position could easily have let things drift. Not him.

hi... just to tell the SDP, if you guys are up to it... why haven't you been in parliament?? for so long... you have been creating nothing but trouble.... if you're so free, how about going back home and enjoy family life.... stop trying to say human rights and freedom of speech... let me tell you this... seriously, if singapore has you as the government... we are doomed! cos you will surely force us to wear big spectacles.... so mr chee.... pls tell your sister and yourself.. including your party members to get out of my life before i shame you in public.... you may not know it but i have the rights to do it...... human rights right??
• Albert ho - why you are like that
Hi Dr Chee
Why you are alway like this?
Dont you have any counter proposal?
No wonder LKY said, YOU can speak good English but No Content.
• Christopher - Time for Changes
Hi Dr Chee and Team
I believed it's time to change the tactics to defeat the current ruling party. It is great to hear the facts but 'they' will just counter saying you never talk about how the opposition parties will help the citizens, you only finding fault with the ruling party. Most people know the facts but choose to ignore it. *Sad*
We have lost a Great Fighter Mr JBJ to the citizens of Singapore. His efforts and endless voice of the poor will never ever been heard again. I also wish Dr Chee and Team well and success in bringing more talents to your Team and more success in your next election.
Dr Chee is a gentleman, no point spoiling your image on facts as 'they' will counter you. Counter 'them' by changing your tactics.. you will caught 'them' by surprise.
'WE NEED THE OPPOSITION TO VOICE OUR PROBLEMS.. BUT CHOOSE TO VOICE OUT IN PARLIMENT'
I do admired you and your team hard work. You all walk the ground recruiting more supporters even when election is not around the corner. Great work guys!!!
All The Very Best!

In your Awesome Words column, I just wish to point out that the quote is incorrectly attributed to Robert Kennedy as it was George Bernard Shaw who said it and not Robert Kennedy.

The quote in question is the one which goes along the lines of "People see things as they are and ask why. I see things which are not and ask why not?"
• Benjamin - Want to know how is it like in New Zealand?
Hi there, I live in New Zealand and this is my first time on your website.

In New Zealand, it is a democracy country and there are about 22 political parties. There was a general election very recently and it was on the 8th of November. Before this year, the NZ Labour party was the government of NZ for 9 years in a row, but then the NZ National Party is now the government.

Currently, the Green Party, New Zealand First Party, Progressive Party and the Labour Party are the opposition of the National Party, United Future Party and the ACT Party.
National has drafted a deal with the Maori Party to be part of the government.

And well, even though I have seen the results of this years NZ general election on the 8th of November on TV that was broadcasted live by John Campbell (Started at 7pm and shows after 3News (6pm)) in his news studio in Auckland, the NZ 2008 Election Results is also online at http://www.decision08.co.nz/tabid/229/default.aspx
Hi Chee brothers
U guys really need to seek mental help.
U really believe u will replace PAP?
u better to go to prison and think how stupid u are.
Well nobita, I think you should think before you speak, you think that SDP is stupid. My opinion is not. If you say sentences like "u better to go to prison and think how stupid u are." to the SDP, you may not know how it is like in other countries. Just like in America, there are more than just 1 political party, New Zealand also has multiple political parties. Voters vote who they want to govern the country that they are living in, and the party that get the most votes becomes the government. In a country like New Zealand, parties can form a coalition with a main political party.
• Sebastian the Junkie Rocker - Inconstructive remarks
Dear Sir/Mdm,

I like to visit this website as i can learn more about SDP.I do appreciate what the SDP had done to hold the ruling party at bay. However many bloggers are here just to throw complains and anger at each others becos of differences in opinions and views. Very few constructive remarks. It makes me sick of reading the blog. Too many rude remarks on individual rather than going against flawed system.
Don't you think?

Regards,
Sebastian

• firepower - The Singapore Miracle, Myth and Reality, 2nd Editi
Excellent Book
Truth that all singaporeans should know!

This second edition of The Singapore Miracle, Myth and Reality has been extensively revised and updated and includes over 40,000 words of new text.

The first edition, published in November 2006, aroused widespread interest with its expose of the many claims Singapore has made about itself and its miracle. The book rigorously scrutinised Singapore's global reputation for having a super-efficient, cutting-edge economy where economic freedom, transparency and affluence prevail and where poverty has been virtually abolished.

Much further research by the author, Rodney King, has extended many of the book's points. He has uncovered new evidence showing that Singapore's R&D efforts remain unimpressive despite huge expenditure and that income inequalities continue to steadily rise as do poverty levels.

Extensive revisions have also been made to Chapter Five's accounts of Temasek Holdings and the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC). While both are state-run enterprises, each began adoption risk-taking strategies several years ago to boost profits. But these strategies began to produce losses for them, which have rapidly mounted since the sub-prime crisis began in mid-2007 and subsequently the world financial meltdown. The book's descriptions of Temasek and the GIS, their activities, investments and histories, are among the recent and comprehensive of those written about them to date.

• firepower - National Service: Many missing in-action!
We The People of Singapore,

It is really interesting to watch how the Singapore government insist on this National Service issue. Honestly I think they got more to loose than gain. Considering the benefits derived from those people who leave. (Melvin Tan for example, besides I personally know of numerous families in USA, NZ, Australia, Canada and UK.)

Besides it would have been interesting to know the volume of benefits Malaysia has attained from the exiled Singaporeans, visiting form across the border.

Also, most who left are the ones with sons! Perhaps more incentives ...

It is ironic to think that NS help

foster greater cohesiveness and understanding across the different ethnic groups
develop patriotism and loyalty to Singapore and (post-NS Singaporeans are just as bigots as ever! Racial harmony? my toes laugh!)

that NS is also seen as a rite of passage to manhood, is absolutely absurd!

I have heard of some saying about the benefits derived from Singapore education system, yah da yah da yah … well? how about all the benefits they have derived from the adopted country, is Singapore going to repay these countries for the difference? If the child leaves Singapore at 10 years old, then studied in NZ as a resident of NZ until he is 18 years old, there is cost incurred by the NZ government for its residents, who’s paying for the value Singapore benefited from the outstanding 9 years? I’ve never heard of Singapore paying NZ or Australia or Canada for educating their Singapore NS men when they return to SERVE Singapore!

Forcing the people back to serve the NS is only going to make matters worst, in fact creating enemies from within, resentful nationals are excellent spies, perfect traitors and double crossers, double agents. There are plenty of them already in Singapore without even trying. Besides these are people with external resources, focus groups are evolving with detrimental effects.

This is going to be fun to watch.
• BryanT - Counter propaganda
There is an article "Suicide rates at 9-yr low" in ST today which is probably a propaganda piece by the ruling party.

It has quotes such as "the attention paid by the Government to issues of mental health, and policies that help the needy and elderly, have helped bring the suicide rate down.... Efforts to keep people employed are another key factor"

I suggest that SDP writes an article to counter this.
