Singapore Democrats
Hand it over, MDA officer Ahmad Kasbari demands
Officials from the Media Development Authority (MDA) barged in on a private screening of a film entitled One Nation Under Lee and demanded that the organisers hand over the DVD.

The 45-minute movie is critical narration of how Mr Lee Kuan Yew rode to power championing democracy and then using it to consolidate his power by crush his opponents and the media.

Halfway through the screening which took place at the Peninsula-Excelsior Hotel this afternoon, three officers from the MDA burst in and said that the screening was an offence.

A group of activists then asked them on what authority did they have to insist on stopping the screening as it was a private event, not unlike, for example, a wedding where videos of the betrothed are played for guests.

The gatecrashers, comprising of assistant director Mr Tan Chiu Kee, Mr Ahmad Kasbari and Ms Padmamuthu, cited the Films Act which states that "it is an offence to have in your possession or to exhibit or distribute any film without a valid certificate." This would make almost all Singaporeans violators of the Act.

After a lengthy exchange the Master of Ceremonies, Mr Chia Ti Lik, allowed the three into the hall. The crowd burst into sacrcastic applause and the officers responded with sheepish smiles. The police at one stage arrived but left whithout doing much.

"Please hand over the film," Mr Tan demanded.

"Please come up to the front, introduce yourselves and you can have it," the MC invited.

With the DVD in hand the officers left. The event continued with Mr Martyn See and Mr Seelan Palay offering their views on the Films Act.

"If it is an offence to screen such a film, then everyone with a birthday or wedding video would be criminalised," Mr See said, adding that artists and writers must not be afraid to document and write when they see and hear.

MDA officers Padmamuthu (foreground) and an unidentified colleague (grey shirt) approaching the stage to seize the DVDHe said that the film would be a "fantastic learning tool" for students and anybody who is interested in learning about Singapore should watch it.

Mr Seelan added that as an artist, he cannot care so much about laws. "Otherwise, art cannot take place. I need to make films about what I see and sometimes laws don't allow that."

At this juncture, the MDA officers came back and demanded that the LCD projector used for the screening be handed over as well.

"No, you can't have it," insisted Mr Chia Ti Lik. "You are exceeding your powers and you have no right to take it."

Ms Chee Siok Chin made it clear that the officers were already given the DVD and had no right to the LCD projector.

Some members of the audienced weighed in and told the officials that they were rude by intruding in on a private function. "You already have the video, what more do you want?" one of the attendees pointed out.

Sensing that the organisers were not going to back down, the officials retreated and left.

How the authorities received word about the function is anyone's guess but admission was restricted to those who had purchased a ticket.

The film contained interviews with Messrs Francis Seow, Said Zahari and J B Jeyaretnam as well as musical clips critising Ministers' salaries and the GIC. The film had both educational and inspirational qualities. Perhaps this is why the MDA was particularly anxious to get its hands on it.

Witnessing the entire incident were two US embassy officials who were among the invited guessts.

Another group of media activists had also conducted a similar screening of videos at an art gallery at Rowell Road. The films were about the SDP's election rallies in 2006 and the WB-IMF protests at Hong Lim Park in September 2006. That screening took place without incident.

Sorry i wasn't able to attend today's screening. :(

If not for technology and the internet, Singaporeans would have had to depend on the biased reporting of the local press as to what transpired at such events/activities.

As to what happened today, its another revealing, revolting and despicable example of the police state.

Whoa! I was not even informed of this event!

Is there a shameless spy posing as a Supporter?

But I really hope that you have preserve more copies of the film for future screenings and for intrnet viewers.

Hyah, hyah, hyah, this is simply priceless. Charging into a private event like B-movie thugs and seizing, wait for it....ONE bloody DVD......like it's Paris Hilton polical porn, for Heaven's sake! Police straining at the leash and eagerly waiting to crush the rioting mob too! Was there an air raid siren as well?

What a bunch of goondu pinheads. Now, instead of a tiny handful of people knowing of it, the whole damn country's wetting themselves with excitement and gagging to see it. The organisers must be thrilled to bits. They really couldn't have bought this level of publicity - this movie is going to shoot right to the top of the 'die die must see' hit parade.

Hope someone there had the presence of mind to video the whole Keystone Cops affair so the rest of us can enjoy a good laugh too. I can hardly wait to see the bit where the trio came back to demand the projector as well and had to leave sheepishly with tail tucked firmly between legs.

The MDA ought to be vigorously encouraged to do more great PR disasters like this. Each and every time, they'll look like drooling village idiots. And it'll be yet another nail in the coffin of the Thought Police.

Three cheers for the MDA! Let's have a book-burning festival next!

Wow just when you thought you have heard it all and here is something even more preposterous. So does this mean that if I am to shoot a family video, I will NOT have the rights to show my video to my family or anyone until I have it licensed? Is this a joke? Also, based on the account, why are these people from MDA acting like a public MASTER when they are in fact a public SERVANT?
Paul Poh  -     Sat, 17 May 2008 12:04 pm
Lee Kuan Yew, I beg you, don't disgrace yourself, don't disgrace us Singaporeans, don't disgrace Singapore.

People from other countries will laugh at us.

We are not your slaves or serfs.

I beg you Lee Kuan Yew.

You don't want face, I want face.

Lee Kuan Yew, as a citizen of Singapore, I am ordering you to behave and stop disgracing us. Keep in mind that you are a public servant, no more than that.

Well done MDA! Thank you for taking part in our little charade to show the world exactly the sort of stupid laws we have in Singapore.

Your timely arrival and idiotic demands had work well to our causes. Not only are we laughing now, but the whole world is laughing together too.

A special mention goes out to Mr. Tan Chiu Kee. The US embassy officials are particularly impressed by your performance so we had agreed that a little reward should be in order. Don't worry, we are keeping you in suspense for now but it will be among the 1st things on our to-do list as soon as PAP falls from power.

Till then, we hope for your continual support by joining us again soon in the very near future.

Thank you.

LKY is very old and will not be around for the forseenable future. My advice to the spy is that do not bet your future against the SDP.

Nowadays, we have many people including the police who had abused their authority, doing things which they did not have the rights to do in the 1st place, as in this e.g, the MDA officers trying to seize the LCD projector screen. It's ridiculous!

Also, I kept track with SDA news and there are many occasions where the police had exaggerated overly, for e.g accusing Ms Chee of biting them, which is plain bull crap ... I certainly don't believe Ms Chee will be doing such things ... these small flies of the police force wanna act big, but in fact they bring down the respect most used to have for police. They just spell the unprofessionalism nowadays in their task force by making all kinds of untrue stories when they did not receive the cooperation they want with their target.

But why should a person give in under this form of intimidation ? If someone believes what they are doing is right, they should stand by it. Those police giving Ms Chee a hard time only try to act big, but infact don't know their work ethics well.

I admire SDP and all opposition speaking & upholding the truth spirit.

:cheer: May the providence hands guide you guys from glory to glory. :)
